ROLLY Reviews: ESK Enlighten

review, ROLLY Mag

4-n-Butylresorcinol… I can’t pronounce it but let me tell you what it is!

ESK Enlighten was received in PR from Black Sixteen Agency. All opinions are my own.

What is it?Ā

(Description provided by brand)

Hyperpigmentation is a broad term used to describe concentrated areas of skin that become discoloured due to excess melanin production. Often harmless and limited to the face, neck, hands and chest, most common forms of hyperpigmentation include solar lentigines, also known as sun, age or liver spots; and melasma.

While treatment options can include intense pulsed light (IPL), cosmetic surgery and dermabrasion, tyrosinase inhibition is proven to be the most effective and safest treatment to date. Offering a gentle and superior alternative to hydroquinone-based formulations, Enlighten by Evidence Skincare (ESK) uses a relatively new tyrosinase-inhibitor, 4-n-Butylresorcinol (4nB), to lighten skin and reduce future melanin deposits.

Pronounced ā€œ4-n-beautal-resorcinolā€, 4nB has been proven to be the most effective depigmenting agent when compared to industry alternatives such as hydroquinone, arbutin, azelaic acid, and kojic acid, and produce faster results in as little 6 weeks with less skin irritation.

Formulated with sensitive skin types in mind, Enlighten combines 4nB with antioxidant multitasker, niacinamide (vitamin B3), to help regulate normal skin cell function, improve the skin’s moisture barrier, and reduce the transfer of melanin to keratinocytes where pigment is deposited. In addition to its hyperpigmentation benefits, Enlighten is also shown to help balance sebum production, increase collagen synthesis, and reduce post-inflammatory redness.

Suitable for daily and long-term use, Enlighten can be paired with other active ingredients, such as vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids, for enhanced depigmentation and overall skin rejuvenation. Available globally via Evidence Skincare (ESK).Ā

TL;DR

  • Powerful ingredient that treats hyperpigmentation
  • Formulated for sensitive skin types
  • Includes niacinamide which can be great for evening skin tone and balancing oil production \suitable for daily and long term use
  • Safe to use in conjunction with other ingredients

My thoughtsĀ

I was incorporating Enlighten into my nighttime skincare routine because my morning one is hit and miss – sometimes I do it, sometimes I don’t. By using the product at night, I was guaranteed to use it for a considerable length of time to test the effectiveness.

My skin loves niacinamide, and so I was confident using this product on my sensitive skin without any irritation.

I noticed that after a few days of use, my skin tone did appear more even, and my blemishes looked less red and irritated.

Note that I do not suffer from hyperpigmentation but do have an uneven skin tone.

I was very impressed with this product and felt like I saw benefits from using it.

The biggest downside for me, is the price tag.

Yes you are paying for a quality product, but I can’t afford to be spending that much money on a product I will empty quickly.

ESK did offer 30% off at Black Friday so I would definitely consider waiting for a sale to repurchase the product.Ā

For another opinion, you can read IC x Beauty’s review here and The Caryl Edit’s review here.

Enlighten retails for $95 RRP (50g).

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: 5 DAYS OF 5 FOUNDATIONS #2

ROLLY Mag

In October I posted my First Impressions: 5 Days of 5 Foundations! I have also done one on mascaras.Ā

It’s a great way to encourage me to

  • try out lots of different products in my collection
  • Make content
  • And give rapid reviews!

For reference, my skin concerns are redness, texture and acne/acne scarring.

I tend to wear light coverage, glowy bases.

And I have combination skin.

These are all reviews after only one day of wear… so not my final reviews but a good starting point if you’re similar to me and want to know what’s worth a try!

I have also tried to include a mixture of reviews from other bloggers!

When I reference my blending brush, I use this one.

And my beauty sponge is this one.

Bourjois BB Cream in 01 Light

I have the shade ā€˜light’ (there are only 3 shades in the range, booo). I was worried it would be too dark for me, and whilst it’s not my perfect match, it is definitely wearable. If you are any fairer than me, I wouldn’t recommend this.

I first applied it with a brush and enjoyed that application. It is quite glowy, and did a good job at covering up redness but blemishes still came through. It didn’t quite last all day, I would say it gave about 5-6 hours of wear. Keep in mind I didn’t set it either. I did however, enjoy how it wore. For me, it looked it’s best after 2-3 hours of wear. I can definitely see myself incorporating this into my routine more often.  It’s perfect for a little bit of no-fuss coverage.

Be mindful of the strong scent.

IC x Beauty review and first impressions

Ere Perez Oat Milk Foundation in Latte

You know when you get a new car, and you start seeing it everywhere? That’s kind of how I feel about EP. I got a few of their products in the Vital + Pharmacy Supplies sale, and then was sent a few products in PR. And now I’m seeing them all of my feed! After a bunch of bloggers said they loved the foundation – see here and here- I decided to buy it for myself.

I got the lightest shade ā€˜latte’, which is a little bit too light for me. So already not a massive fan of the shade match. However, the brand has recently bought out two new shades, with a promise to keep developing.

The founder of EP herself recommends using your hands to apply the fountain. So that’s what I did. I agree that this is a really good application technique for this foundation. I did use a beauty sponge to apply a second layer which worked okay.

It is definitely medium, buildable coverage. It looked pretty good overall but did cling to dry patches and a few breakouts I had. However, I found that the longer I wore the foundation, the better it looked.

To be honest, I don’t really see the fuss about this foundation after just one use. Especially because – for ā€˜everyday’-  I tend to go for less coverage and something more glowy.

This was quite high coverage (for me), semi-matte and not the right shade – so that was hard to look past.

I can imagine this could be a good foundation if you have oily skin or you like something with medium coverage. If this was my match, I think it would be the perfect ā€˜night out’ foundation.

But as we know, I’m not a fan of mixing shades to get my perfect match. I want to be able to buy one shade and be done with it.

Also, there is the issue that when you first squeeze the tube, heaps of air comes out and it significantly reduces the amount of product that appears to be in the tube. My friend @byamygee pointed this out and many other online reviews reflect this. Interesting… @showmetheglow compared this to chip packet! You still get the intended amount of product (or chips) but it’s a bit deflating (literally!)

This also has a strong scent.

On a Beauty Bender review

MAC Face and Body in C1

I was a bit stressed because I ordered a Mac Face and Body foundation off Amuse Beauty, only using the Internet to help me pick a shade!

I chose C1 because on the Mac Australia website it is described as ā€œfair beige with neutral undertone for light skin.ā€ I also used the foundation match tool in Adore Beauty and the site Findation. Both of these matched me to C1.

I was tossing up between C1 and N1. I know someone online who uses N1 and they look to be the same skin tone-ish as me but the reason I didn’t choose that is because the Mac site describes it as ā€œrosy beige with neutral undertone for light to medium skin.ā€ All sounds good except I am not light to medium, I would say I’m fair to light. That’s the reason I didn’t choose that. However, in my research since purchasing, Temptalia describes C1 as for ā€œvery light or light skin tones with yellow, moderately yellow undertones.ā€ And N1 they describe as for ā€œvery light to light skin tones with neutral undertones.ā€

However, when I tried this, it was clearly a VERY yellow undertone.

I’m so disappointed and confused about how there could be such a discrepancy in the description.

Nonetheless, I persisted and gave this a chance. The coverage is honestly so sheer that you could almost get away with the wrong shade match. BUt my neck is very pale so that was throwing everything off a bit.

Instead, I used a bit of moisturiser to mix in with the foundation to tone it down a bit.

I applied this was a buffing brush, and really blended it into the skin. I’ve heard that if you keep buffing, it builds coverage.

I liked this application.

The coverage is barely there, but buildable. I really liked how no fuss this was, it looked natural, like your skin but better, and it had a day-long wear time too. I was thoroughly impressed by this.

Gossmakeupchat can give a better review and demo than I can…

I also didn’t expect the strong scent of this…

But basically, big fan!

Summertime Glows reviews

Max Factor Miracle Second Skin in 01 Fair

I was very excited to try this! It’s described as a ‘hybrid foundation for healthy-looking and visibly perfected skin.’

I used a damp beauty sponge to apply this and really liked it. This is my preferred type of application (I should probs mention this four foundations in lol) but I would be interested to see how this goes with fingers or a brush.

I would say this rings true to all the claims.

  • it is light weight
  • looks like second skin as in it’s very natural looking
  • luminous but not ‘wet glowy’

I think this would work nicely for dry skin types, which the foundation claims too. It also has skincare benefits but I honestly overlook that because I don’t look for that in a foundation. There isn’t a very big shade range, and whilst this was a close match, it definitely leans more yellow on me. It wore well, and honestly looked good straight away. That was something I didn’t find with the Bourjois or EP. Also I like the pump on this tube, that’s my fave type of packaging.

For an everyday look, I am obsessed. I think this is my fave so far.

Amy’s Chapter review

Auntie Haul review

Flower Light Illusion in Porcelain L1

This foundation is lucky last, and because I am so late to the party with this, I did have other people’s opinions swirling around in my head as I tried it.

I first used a wet beauty sponge to apply it but that was NOT the one.

So I went back in with my trusty makeup brush to blend it in.

The reason I hadn’t tried this sooner is because the shades all looked too yellow for me. And I was correct. However, I do think it is more wearable, unlike the Mco Beauty. And whilst it’s more wearable, I still don’t think I would wear it out of my house which is a shame.

As I was applying it, I thought it was a matte finish. However, as it sat on my skin it is definitely a natural finish, and I can understand the ‘luminous’ claim too.

It offers medium coverage, evens skin tone and imperfections. Yet, it felt super light and comfortable on the skin.

If I were to wear this IRL, I would definitely set it with some powder because it was quite glowy even upon first application.

Also, the packaging on this is just delightful!

Like many of this foundations, I enjoyed it, but I can’t look past the poor shade range. Sadness.

I wanted to mention too that I have the concealer from this range and really enjoy it.

OMG! As the day went it, this was getting so glowy. If you are oily, proceed with lots of caution! For these foundation trials I haven’t used primer or powder but I did end up setting my face after a few hours of wear because I had to leave my house and I knew wearing a mask this would just transfer immediately.

First Impressions: 5 Days of 5 Foundations

ROLLY Mag

GUYS! This has been sitting my drafts since April… omg. But I’m working on the second instalments so figured should probably post this hey šŸ˜‰

For reference, my skin type is combination x

Revlon Colour Stay: I’ve used this foundation once or twice before and don’t remember enjoying it all that much. But I gave it another shot. The colour 110 Ivory is perfect for me. I used a buffing brush to put the majority of the product on, and then added some more product to a wet beauty sponge to finish up around my eyes and nose. At first, I wasn’t overly happy with how it looked, but as it settled down, it gave quite a flawless look to the skin. I didn’t use a primer or setting powder (like I usually would) and I found this had disappeared off my face within about 6 hours. I’ll have to test it with both of those things, but otherwise I’m quite happy!

Maybelline Superstay: It claims to be a full coverage foundation and I agree it has the potential to do that. However, it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin- woo! I noticed it didn’t sit very well on the sides of my nose where my pores are the largest. So in future I will use a silicone primer in this area to help minimise the appearance for a more flawless finish. I used a wet Mco Beauty sponge and was really happy with how it applied. A light, matte finish. Unfortunately, it did oxidise a bit within about 2 hours of wear.

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define: I applied this with a wet beauty sponge, and my first impression was how good the colour match was! Definitely has the ability to build up to full coverage. Didn’t emphasise my pores which is what I’m most impressed by! So far, this foundation has lasted the best out of the others I’ve tried this week. It has a light-matte finish. I also really like the large, doe foot applicator. I’ve never used a foundation like this before but think it’s potentially more practical than a pump. Really happy! I was gifted this by @katiescosmopolitan in our beauty swap!

Thin Lizzy Flawless Complexion: I’ve actually tried this before this week. I tested it out on my IG stories, after I bought it in the Priceline half price sale. It applied best with a wet beauty sponge, rather than a brush. It was beautiful and glowy on the skin, with buildable coverage. Initially, I had applied it as a medium coverage and didn’t set it. Because of this, it creased horrendously under my eyes! So next time I tried it at medium coverage, I set it and it lasted really well and the glow still came through. However, this week, I applied it 4 minutes before my uni Zoom class- lol. So I did very light coverage, applied with a wet beuaty sponge and I didn’t set it. I was so impressed with it! Evened out my skin tone and gave me a bit of glow. So nice!! So whilst my first impressions were a bit ‘meh’, I have really grown to love this foundation.

Revlon Candid Glow: This foundation is the one I’ve actually tested the best, because I wore it for about two weeks straight. I had a really busy period at work and so needed a streamlined and quick makeup routine. I liked using this foundation because I could apply it with my fingers, and it never really went wrong. The coverage is extremely light. It evens the appearance of your skin tone but it certainly doesn’t do much more than that. Blemishes and coloured spots still come through. But, that does make for a very natural finish which I don’t mind for an everyday basis. The foundation claims to ‘glow’…. if this is the glow formula I would hate to see the matte! Forget everything you associate with ‘glow’- dewy, fresh, glassy etc. Because you don’t get that. The best way I can describe this is a natural finish. Not a ‘natural glow’, but natural. I also didn’t find this lasted a whole day of wear. And another thing, yes I’ve been wearing it pretty consistently, but I seem to be going through it soooo quickly. It is a smaller packaging than other foundations on the market (only 22ml). So whilst I did keep reaching for it, and I enjoyed it, I’m not sure where I sit. If I could pick it up half price, then I think I would repurchase it because it’s an easy addition to my makeup routine, but nothing groundbreaking in comparisons to the other ones I tried this week.

Have you tried any of these foundations? What do you think?

Aussie Blogger Beauty Swap ft Emmie’s Beauty Life

affordable beauty, Aussie Blogger Beauty Swap, ROLLY Mag

Welcome to a new series! I saw Arna Alayne do this beauty swap with Jessica Braun and thought it would be so fun to do with some of my fave Aussie Beauty Bloggers. To kick things off, we have Emily from @emmiesbeautylife.

You guys will know and love Emily (as I do) for her Priceline recommendations, honest reviews and ‘Spotlight On…’ posts.

How this works is I gave Emily five of my fave affordable beauty items and she swapped with me her five faves!

Below I’ll tell you what I chose for Emily and why, and give a review on the products she gave me!

Be sure to check out Emily’s blog and Instagram, as she has also reviewed the products I swapped with her!

Thank you for collaborating with me, Emily, and I hope you all enjoy! xx

What Emily Gave Me:

Rimmel Transparent Loose Powder: Ok, guys… I am doing this beauty swap with another person (soon to be revealed haha!) and they also swapped me this powder. So I’ve obviously been sleeping on it. My current loose powder of choice is the innisfree Matte Blue which is under $20 so I would deem that affordable. however, this Rimmel one can be as little as $8 if you find it half price, which is bonkers! Especially because you get so much product! Honestly, after trying this I would never buy a high end loose powder. This does the work for you!

Maybelline Colour Tattoo Cream Gel Eyeshadow, shades ‘On and On Bronze’ and ‘Socialite’: I never paid much attention to these eyeshadows before, but I’m so glad Emily has brought them into my life. I tried applying these with my fingers which works well but also a small brush. Depends how much pigment you’d like. I always wear an eyeshadow primer, and set my eyes with a powder before I wore these. They claim to have 24 hour wear, and whilst I haven’t tested that, they do last the full work day. You can read about why Emily likes them here and I have to agree. I wore both these shades by themselves as a ‘one and done’ look but think that ‘Socialite’ works particularly well as a base or on the inner third of the eye whilst ‘On and on bronze’ is fabulous lid or middle third option!

Loreal Unlimited Mascara: I’ve tried this mascara thanks to @maddies.makeupmess’ recommendation and I at first I was excited to try it because you can move the wand to be positioned at a few different angles. I realised quickly however that this wasn’t actually a feature that I thought was necessary. i just use it in a straight, regular position. This swap with Emily reminded me to actually use this mascara again. I found it quite a thick formula that appeared to coat my lashes in a way that made them look chunky? I didn’t noticed that it performed exceptionally in terms of lengthening or volumising. And, it was starting to flake at about 8 hours of wear (which yes, is a long time that it didn’t flake, but I have mascaras that don’t budge at all.) I’m sorry guys, but this one doesn’t cut it for me!

Nude by Nature Moisture Shine Lipstick, shade Nude: This lipstick is heaven!!!! I’m not usually one to go for a neutral lip however I think it’s ‘important’ to have one in your collection. This is the only neutral I need! Super comfortable to wear, needs to be reapplied but is easy to do so. There are a few other pretty colours in this range too. Big fan! (Also along with this, I wanted to share this article ā€œIt’s time to finally talk about the decades-old problem with ‘nude’ beauty products.ā€)

Andalou Face Mask Brightening Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask: I already have this mask in my collection but honestly can never be without it. It’s so freaking fabulous- a really effective exfoliating mask that leaves your skin looking and feeling smooth and fresh. See why Emily likes it here.

What I Gave Emily:

Mud Makeup CC Cream: I apologise to everyone who loves this, because it is sadly (and maddeningly) being discontinued. If I had’ve known that when I purchase it, I wouldn’t have got it haha in case Emily falls in love with it!! This only comes in two shades, and the lightest shade only suits me when I’m tanned (which is rare) but it is a Aussie beauty fave for a reason. Great coverage, durability and could seriously rival other CC creams. And the fact that you could buy it at Woolies??? A dream!

Flower Beauty Highlighting Palette: I asked Emily if she’d tried any Flower, and she had tried the concealer and foundation, so I was eager to introduce her to more of the range. This highlight palette is an absolute steal and fab quality. The brush that is included is pretty useless IMO. I often use the champagne shade alone, but it’s funny to have the gold and rose gold – these I use more so on the eyes than face.

Flower Beauty Blush in ‘sweet pea’: This was the blush that made me love blush so it holds a special place in my heart. A beautiful, natural colour that lasts well on the skin.

Barry M Lip Kit in ‘Femme’: This is my hidden gem of the drugstore. You can buy this lip liner and gloss separately but i think they’re a power couple when use together. This is my absolute perfect mauve colour. The liner goes with 90% of my lip product collection and I’d say this gloss is *my fave*. Such good pigment for a gloss, and the actual formula isn’t sticky. Plus, I find it holds up pretty well. Brilliant! Honestly, this is why I wanted to do this swap, to introduce this combo to more people haha!

Loreal Lash Paradise Mascara: This mascara has a big reputation and rightly so. The cute rose gold packaging, the perfect brush shape, wears well. Just a great all-rounder. I was actually going to give Emily the Maybelline Lash Sensational with is my GOAT but she is already a fan of that. I like both of those mascaras because I can wear them for an everyday look or build them up for a false lash effect.

Have you tried any of these products? Who else would you like me to do this beauty swap with?

Priceline Half Price Cosmetics Sale Recommendations & Wishlist – June 2020

ROLLY Mag

Not going to lie, guys, this sale caught me off guard!

Normally these sales happen Tuesday through Thursday… so this catalogue ending on a Tuesday was pretty typical and I didn’t see it coming.

So I’m madly rushing to put together this resource for you the day before the sale goes live.

These are my favourite posts to write, and I stand by what I’ve recommended in the past –

See those posts here!

March Haul

March Haul Part 2

November Recommendations

November Haul

July Haul

July Haul Part 2

I’m trying to recommend new things, that I’ve not yet shared in one of these posts before!

Also!!!!! I was gifted the Luma and Makeup Revolution products I’ve mentioned. However, I truly love them and was under no obligation to post. This post is not associated with or sponsored by Priceline. (But like, in future pls do sponsor me xo)

Recommendations:

Thin Lizzy Foundation: I picked this up last half price sale, after @beautybyhiuy recommended it. It’s a gorgeous, glowy foundation that is seriously slept on!

Thin Lizzy Sponge: @i_shall_shop has sung the praises of this sponge for ages but I’d never remembered to pick it up. I finally bought it last sale and let me tell you… the hype is real. This is the best makeup sponge I’ve ever used. Better than Mco, Real Techniques, Kmart etc etc. So good, in fact, I recently picked up some when they were half price at Big W.

Revlon Lip Oil: Another purchase from the last sale, this lip oil is really easy to wear and has a sheer pigment.

Revlon Lip Polish: Revlon just don’t really fab lip products! The perfect, pigmented gloss.

Revlon Candid Glow Foundation: how this is called a ā€œfoundationā€ I do not know because it merely works as a tinted moisturiser for me but that’s why I like it! I could apply this with my eyes close and know it would be ok. So if you need very light coverage, this could work for you!

Makeup Revolution Waterproof Mascara: I actually have a post coming with a more in depth review but this mascara is incredible. I don’t really need/want waterproof formulas so I’m hoping to pick up the regular one!

Makeup Revolution Brow Tint: You can read about how much I love that here.

Luma Beauty:  My favourite product is the cheek and lip tint in the shade Muse that I purchased a few sales ago. But I was recently gifted the range and am enjoying the brow mascara and this highlight. See @Centaine_mclean’s review here.

Wishlist:

Revlon Super Lustrous Glass Shine Lipsticks: These have just launched in Australia, and don’t seem to be available online yet so you’ll have to get them in store. They have been so popular in America, I first found them when Allana raved about them here.

I plan on buying a few – oops…. including ‘so sleek pink’, ‘beaming strawberry’, ‘glossed up rose’ and ‘fire & ice’.

Australis Foiled Eyeshadow in Guns n Rose Petals: This was recommenced by Arna Alayne and I did pick up another shade in the Big W sale I mentioned but would love to try this shade in particular.

Bourjois Big Oui Mascara:  I have heard great things about this but I certainly don’t need another mascara. So I won’t pick it up this time around, but eventually. Same goes for the brow mascara.

Bourjois Healthy Mix BB Cream: @mummakesitup and @theamyclark are both fans of this, with Amy calling it a NARS dupe… sign me up!

Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream: another @i_shall_shop recommendation! I don’t know if I need this and the CC cream so we’ll see haha.

Maybelline Glass Setting Spray: I honestly haven’t heard a whole lot about this, but I love the sound of it. I am also so tempted by the Maybelline Nudes palette however I! Don’t! Need! More! Eyeshadow!

Thinks I definitely wouldn’t recommend:

Australis Fresh n Flawless Foundation: I am one of the very few people who doesn’t like this foundation, I know. But it just didn’t work for me in any shape or form. I think it’s particularly bad for dry skin types. @thebeautyroast also isn’t a fan.

Maybelline The Falsies Lash Lift Mascara: This post by Amy Clark shares some fab items but it reminded me that I was disappointed in this mascara. It has big claims that it sadly didn’t live up to for me. I think Lash Sensational works harder than this!

In case non-cosmetic items are on sale, I’d also recommend:

  • Neutrogena Cleansing Oil
  • Neutrogena Bright Boost Polish
  • Anadalou Roses, Enzyme and CannaCell Masks
  • Revlon Face DeFuzzers
  • Manicare Microfibre Cloth (cheaper alternative / similar concept to Face Halo!)

Random but notabe:

Also recently I picked up aother Arna Alayne recommendation, the Models Prefer Light Veil. I haven’t used it yet but I’m so excited to and it’ll be so affordable in this sale if you want to try it out too.

I really feel like I don’t have all that much to share with you this sale, but hopefully you and I both find some new treasures!

Makeup Revolution Brow Tint Review

ROLLY Mag

This brow tint was gifted to me, however I was under no obligation to write this review. I was just really interested in the process and wanted to share my thoughts. Irene from @icxbeauty has also written a review you can read here.

I tint my eyelashes at home because they’re quite long, but fair.

My eyebrows however, I’ve never tinted at home because I’m afraid I’ll get it wrong. And I’ve just not really thought about going to a salon to get them done.

So I was very excited when the Makeup Revolution Brow Tint landed on my desk. It comes in three shades, is $12.50 and is available from Priceline, for us Aussies.

I used the shade taupe.

Directions: Apply to a clean brow using the applicator. Leave on to develop for up to 2 hours for semi permanent brow tint that lasts up to 3 days.

The process: the applicator is like a thin paint brush, and was super easy to apply. I was worried the tint would stain my skin to, like what sometimes happens with my eyelashes, but it was fine! I tided up around the edges with a Q-tip. It has a slight smell but nothing overly offensive.

I accidentally left it on for three hours, because time got away from me. But it didn’t give me any reaction at all so that was fine. I jumped in the shower and removed it with my wet Press Beauty Swipie (I guess you could use any microfibre towel or even just a face washer!) and it came of so easily- pretty much in one swipe.

Results: I was so impressed with this tint. It looked very natural, I don’t think you could possibly make it ‘too dark’. It lasted about 3 full days for me.

I would definitely recommend trying this if you are new to eyebrow tinting and want to make sure you like it. But having done this, it makes me think I should got an at-home kit that lasts longer than 3 days- because that really isn’t all that practical to be honest. And the tint was quite light, I would still add some product to my brows. It’s easy to use, effective and very budget-friendly. Certainly can’t hurt to try! I’ll continue to use it, whilst I have the spare time during self isolation to keep the product on my eyes for two hours every few days however I can’t see much time for this in my non-isolation life.

Before

During

After

4 Days Later

These pictures were so hard to take haha! But I hope this gives you a good idea of the effects!

This product is likely to go on sale on ASOS and Priceline so keep your eyes out for that too!

Have you tried at home brow tinting?

My Haircare Routine – Blogmas Day 21

ROLLY Mag

I would describe my hair type as thick and wavy- with frizz on top.

I’ve found nothing to help with the frizz, except for when a hairdresser heat-styles my hair. I simply cannot achieve the same look at home.

My mum has a GHD straightener which I borrow to smooth out the front bits from time to time, and I have this curling wand which I adore but can only be bothered using for ā€˜special occasions’.

Otherwise, my hair is up in my signature top knot (I’m literally known for this hairstyle lol, it’s been my go to since forever), with a scrunchie, and the recent addition of a pearl hair clip (one of these options from Kmart 1 / 2 /3).

As for actually going to the hairdressers, I’m not faithful. I just go wherever is easiest, and honestly, cheapest. All I ever get is a trim and maybe a few ā€˜face defining’ layers. And that’s it.

I’ve had a few scary experiences with hairdressers in the past- where I’ve left in tears. I have started joking that you never leave the hairdressers happy.

It had actually reached the point where I preferred going to the dentist over the hairdressers.

However, I recently had an experience that changed all of that.

I had a few days off, and so I had planned to do boring life things like, get a haircut, go to the dentist etc.

I told one of my best friends this, and she said she had booked a hairdressing appointment already, at a newly renovated salon in our town.

I thought, omg, let’s go together!

So I booked and paid for my appointment online, which is something I’d never done before. I was usually a walk in customer.

I was actually excited about this haircut.

The salon was beautiful, really modern and had a functional, IG-worthy layout.

The hairdresser we had booked to see (I chose randomly!) was sick, so we both had the owner there to cut our hair. Her knowledge and experience was evident, so I’m really glad it turned out like this.

She offered us tea, coffee, soft drink (it was 9am so we politely declined) which was already SUCH a different experience to any other haircut I’d had.

She made me feel really comfortable.

I went first.

My hair was the longest it had ever been, and whilst I loved the ā€˜your hair is so long’ compliments, it was beginning to get a bit ratty at the ends.

So I motioned to my collarbones- I was getting a decent 5-6 centimetres cut off. I wish I took before and after pics!

The hairdresser goes, ā€˜oh, so you’re getting a lob… a long bob.’

And this scared me, I didn’t want to label the chop hah!

Nonetheless, I got a lob.

My hair felt so light. I’d never thought my long hair was heavy but in comparison, it’s so different.

I loved it.

Throughout both of our haircuts, we were chatting away with our hairdresser about life and hair and it was really fun. Like she really cared.

I told her, that I never paid any attention to my hair care. I just used whatever shampoo was in the shower already, or on sale at Coles.

I think she died a little.

I knew that Pantene didn’t have a great reputation. But I often have Tresemme or Garneir in my shower.

The reason I don’t really put much effort into my hair is because it not only proves to put up with whatever I put in it, but because there is sooooo much information out there, I prefer to focus on makeup and skincare.

Imagine the information overload if I cared about my haircare too… well!

I am really enjoying wearing my hair down, it’s at a fun, swishy length and I can curl it pretty regularly and quickly now. But wearing it up for work has been a struggle- I’m not very creative when it comes to hair, and it no longer goes in a top knot.

Because it is so much shorter too, I am trying to train my hair to be washed less often.

The hairdresser scraped the scissors down my hair, and there was a puff of powder in the air, and built up on the scissors.

I was shocked (and a bit horrified). She explained it to be the silicone build up.

This was proof enough to me- not an IG advertisement- actual evidence that convinced me to spend $40 on a salon grade shampoo and conditioner set.

I was perfectly happy to spend this money- I had a wonderful haircut and experience, and if buying expensive shampoo and conditioner was going to take care of my hair (minimal effort!) then I was happy to do it.

I went home and shared my story on the You Beauty Facebook Group, asking for savey silicone-free hair options.

The comments went crazy with recommendations- many suggested I look into the Curly Girl Hair Method as it encourages the use of silicone-free products. I actually have a friend who follows this regime and loves it. But! Different things work (or don’t work) for different people.

Then, Leigh Campbell, the Beauty Queen herself, commented this.

And a lot of other people agreed, saying that silicone build up protects your hair and is the best form of defence against heat.

And remember, I am not an expert. But I wondered if my years of silicone hair products were what made my hair so durable.

So now, my opinion has changed…

I don’t think silicone is the enemy. To me, at least.

I will use up my expensive shampoo and conditioner, but I don’t think I will repurchase it.

Garnier do a silicone free savey option that received rave reviews on the You Beauty thread, which I actually do have in my shower at home so I will try it out too.

I am simply sharing my story. And as much as I love the You Beauty group (and any Facebook group), I think members need a friendly reminder that everyone has different opinions and we need to be mindful of those.

Take everyone’s opinion (in life na din Facebook groups) with a grain of salt.

So, there we have it, a hair care evolution story.

I would love to know your relationship with haircare… share in the comments!

SPF Lip Balm Inventory – Blogmas Day 19

ROLLY Mag

Yesterday I shared my updated SPF inventory, and today I’m excited to share my SFP lip balm collection and reviews. Be sure to let me know your fave SPF lip balm in the comments- I’m always looking to find something new.

Dermal Lip Balm / here

I had high hopes for this balm, because for a long time it was the only one I could find that was 50+! (Bondi Sands 50+ is new to the scene.) However, I cannot possible like this balm because the taste is soooooo strong. I have friends who use this without worry, but I unfortunately can’t get past it. Their team on IG said they were creating a new formula (or flavour?) which I will definitely try when it comes out. Anything has to be better!

Lanolips / here

Perfect for everyday wear with the tint of colour but not enough staying power for beach days. Lanolips are said to bringing out the same formula minus the SPF which I think will be a winner because the SPF component does have a particular “taste” IMO.

Bondi Sands / here

I don’t find this balm particularly moisturising nor drying, but it’s 50+ and smells like coconuts so it’s probably my top pick for 1) sun protection and 2) price.

Ultra Violette / here

Very sheer colour that is easy to wear. Like the Lanolips, however, I would rely on this alone for long days in the sun. I look at these products more as makeup than skincare.

Reverse Foundation: Review

ROLLY Mag

If you haven’t heard of “reverse foundation” then don’t worry, because neither had I until a week ago (it’s cosy under this rock, right? 😜)

I discovered it through Jamie Paige (which I spoke about here) but I believe it was “invented” by Samantha Ravndahl.

The basic premise is that you apply every base product but foundation to your face first. I believe it works best with cream products; so that means your bronzer, blush, highlight go on first, then you add foundation lightly over the top of these areas.

The idea is that you only use foundation where you *really* need it.

Forgive me, but I cannot remember where concealer belongs in this application process.

Intrigued, I worked up the courage to try it myself.

These are the products I used!

ModelsOwn Contour Stick:

I picked this up purely to use for this look, as I had no cream bronzer/contour. It was $3 in the Priceline clearance sale. And honestly, I’m glad I only payed that much for it! First impressions- the packaging is so plasticky and flimsy. I couldn’t wind the product up or down without it smearing all over the edges of the packaging. Not fun.

You look kinda crazy as your first apply all these products. So that’s why I was concerned that this contour looked “muddy” when I put it on. But later, as I was applying foundation over the top, this contour was slipping and sliding all over my face and it was a serious case of contour gone horribly wrong.

And on top of that, it had a orange sort of tinge to it as I buffed it into my skin.

Gotta say, I am not a fan.

Revlon Instant Cheek Maker:

I’ve actually reviewed this product before (here) and my thoughts are relatively the same. It’s pretty but application is a STRUGGLE! In my review I said the colour is too intense for me- I actually think it is very subtle upon first application but it is very pink in appearance. Once I put the foundation on (very lightly, mind you) the blush pretty much disappeared! I’ve discovered now, that this product doesn’t work under or over foundation (for me, at least.) Under and it disappears. Over and it smudges all the foundation out of the way (as in, it doesn’t just sit atop).

Mco Beauty Highlight & Glow Stick:

I bought this from Woolies ages ago, when Leigh first recommended it on the You Beauty podcast. But I’ve been yet to use it.

It is much more “gold” than I anticipated. I was expecting something champagne-like. Whilst I didn’t love this on my skin (I just think it doesn’t go as well with my red undertone, pale complexion as it would with Leigh’s olive skin) it was the only product that actually showed up under the foundation (without looking like mud!). It gave a really lovely glow! It’s so cheap and readily available from Woolies. I’ll definitely keep using this product but won’t repurchase.

Ulta3 Fresh Faced Serum Foundation:

First time using this and I have to say, I am really impressed! A little goes a long way and it really does feel like a serum so it applies very nicely to the skin. I used a beauty sponge to apply, but am intrigued to continue experimenting with this product.

The Quick Flick:

I had all intentions to try these Quick Flick eyeliner stamps, but the new “reverse foundation” testing was enough for one day, so I gave this a miss. If you want to try them though, do so with Cortney‘s 10% discount code “QUICKCORTNEY”!

Obviously, a photo of my face would be great to show you the finished *look* but as I am still anonymous on here, I can’t do that. I’m sorry!

To wrap it up, I think next time I try this I will go lighter on the contour and heavier on the blush.

I definitely will try this again one day when I’m at home with no where to be. I don’t feel confident enough right now (in my ability or in the results) to do this for a “going out” look.

Nevertheless… practise makes progress!

I’d love to know if you have any cream product recommendations? I’m usually scared of them- I need some tips! Let me know in the comments!

8 Product Face: Mini Review

ROLLY Mag

I took this pic as I was getting ready for work one day and thought I would quickly run you through the products.

My everyday approach to makeup really is this simple!

Du’it Vitamin E Face Cream / here

For days when I’m wearing little to no make up, I love this as a base or just a day cream. Perfect mix of skincare and makeup, it leaves a tacky base. (Gifted)

Elf Jelly Highlight in Cloud / here

I tried this on the weekend and I use both my finger and a sponge to try and apply it. It removed my foundation underneath with both application efforts and was really tricky to blend out. I thought all hope was lost. But! Today I put in on top of my Vit E cream and under my foundation. It was hard to work with, again, but under a light foundation you could still see the glow underneath. I’m happy with how it looked but do think this product is too fussy and won’t repurchase . It’s a shame because the colour is beautiful.

Innisfree Skinny Brow Mascara / in store

There are quite a few brow mascaras on the market that i use and love, but this was my first and so it holds a special place in my heart. It’s about $12 from Innisfree and that’ss party why I love it- that shop has the best in store experience. Ever. It is soooo relaxing. This formula is a bit wet but if you scrape off the excess it works well. I know Innisfree isn’t very accessible if you’re not Melbourne or Sydney CBD based… so Mco have a nice and cheap brow mascara as do Full Brow– both available online!

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara / here

The lady in Chemist Warehouse told me this was Kim K’s fave mascara… not sure how much truth that statement holds however it is a nice mascara for everyday. I put it on at 7:30 am and it only starts to budge at 7:30 pm when I’m sweating in the gym. It is good for natural looking lashes but you can’t build it up to anything very dramatic so keep that in mind.

Sportsgirl Beauty Tinted Lip Balm in Lolita / I couldn’t find this shade online #sad face* so check in store

These balms are realllllly nice. A gorgeous tint and very luxe packaging. I’m impressed! They truly do feel like a balm too- they’re nourishing and don’t leave your lips dry.

Essence Insta Perfect Foundation / here

When I first tried this I was a bit ‘meh’ but I have since started using it as an everyday, light weight foundation and I am really happy with it! If I use the bit E underneath and have hydrated skin, it lasts really well. I have had issues with it really emphasising dry spots but I found this base combats that. (Gifted by Cortney)

Physicians Formula Blush / here

This was in my September faves… enough said! It’s perfectly subtle.

Australis Fresh and Flawless Powder / here

The best. I use a bit of this to both set my foundations and help magnifying my naturally oily areas on my face. So good!
