Blogging BTS #2

ROLLY Mag

When it comes to blogging, there are no rules!

You often hear bloggers say, “I turn down 99% of collaborations/gifts/etc that I’m offered” and it’s like, “cool, tell us who… tell us why!”

I understand not everyone wants to talk about it, but it’s almost taboo!!

So, I know I certainly would’ve liked a a blog post or two to read about the BTS so that I didn’t feel so clueless or alone in some situations.

Last week I shared the BTS of my gifted products from Subi.

This week I want to share with you about Maarks Lip.

You definitely know this brand. They are sooooooo “Instagrammable”!!

They are a Melbourne based company who create five shades of lip products designed to suit everyone and they offer monogramming on their products. Cute!!!

I really wanted to get my hands on a lippie, so I messaged Maarks on IG and asked if they had any discount codes. The intention was to get a discount code and share it with you, my lovely followers!

The Maarks team got back to me super fast and said they didn’t have a discount code but that they would offer me a free lipstick if I placed an order.

I was excited!

So I bought the shades “Blush” and “Bare”, and asked for “Rouge” to be gifted to me.

Th products arrived in the gorgeous, chic Maarks packaging and in perfect condition, except one.

The shade “Blush” wasn’t quite right, the actual bullet seemed to have been dislodged and so I couldn’t twist it up or down to be used.

I message Maarks about this, and sent them a video demonstrating the issue.

No questions asked, they promised to send me out a replacement.

And sure enough, a few days later it arrived!

Their customer service was incredible. And I was so grateful to them for both the gift and how they dealt with my complaint.

I felt bad having to tell them about the issue, but I was a paying customer and ultimately deserved a product that wasn’t faulty.

The Maarks team were absolutely incredible. I truly am so grateful to have experienced such a fantastic shopping experience with them.

I tell you this, not to boast, but to share my experience.

I refuse to put a disclaimer on these posts because it’s my experience, and I am writing honestly to share with you, and demystify the secrecy of blogging.

Please do share any questions in the comments below!

I am hoping to create a series out of this post- which blogger would you like to know about their blogging BTS?

Natura Maga Review

ROLLY Mag

How pretty are these products from @naturamaga 😍🤩

When Samantha reached out to me and asked if I’d like to try any products- I immediately gravitated towards the solid perfume (top) and the lip balm (obviously! 💁‍♀️)

Many people I know- including two of my best friends- are very sensitive to perfumes… if something disagrees with them, it often brings on sneezing, skin irritations and itchy eyes! And so, I was excited to try the solid perfume, in hope that it would be a good solution for them too.

This one is for “positivity”, with notes of orange, lemon, clove, cinnamon, ginger- which is divine 😍 I apply this to my pulse points. The scent doesn’t last as long as a traditional spray EDP would, however because of its handy solid size, it’s so easy to pop in your handbag and reapply throughout the day (without the fear of it spilling everywhere!)

And good news, when I wear this, my besties don’t sneeze constantly (like they do when I wear my RiRi fragrance 😅🙊) I’ve also found that the balm formulation of this perfume is almost therapeutic when applied. I link the feeling of positivity with the perfume when I take a moment to pause throughout my day to put this on. It’s like an “ahhh” moment! 🤩

If that’s to “ju ju” for you (😅) know that Samantha holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (among other qualifications!), so she knows what she is talking about.

Thank you so much for generously gifting these to me, Sam 💕 If you have any questions about the Natura Maga range, leave them below 💁‍♀️

For a chance to try your own Natura Maga products, enter my giveaway a few posts back to win the Magnesium Oil 🤗

Now, you all know I’m a lip balm girl… so of course I was in my element when testing this one.

It smells amazing… seriously.

I don’t normally go for pots of lip balm lip this because, germs.

But! It’s too cute.

It’s a “plumping” lip balm. I get a very slight “warming” sensation but nothing dramatic. And I’m ok with that!

It’s extremely nourishing in the lips too. Chapped lips be gone!

But what I love most is that I don’t have to worry about ingesting any nasties. It’s made entirely from a la natural ingredients.

You can shop the entire Natura Maga range here.

#ProjectPan: Empties

ROLLY Mag

Hey everyone!

I’ve categorised this Project Pan / Empties series together on the blog- hope you don’t mind!

You can read the other instalments here, here and here.

I’ve actually finished a few products that I challenged myself to “Pan” earlier in the year, so feeling very accomplished!

St Ives Body Lotion:

I have had this body lotion for the longest time. I discovered it as a child and have always repurchased it. It’s lovely and thick but not sticky, and it smells subtle. I am really trying to use body lotion more frequently 1) because I have so many I need to get through and 2) my skin needs a little extra TLC in winter!

Will repurchase!

Sukin Natural Deodorant:

This product smells nice enough but it’s the spray application that lets it down. The sprays runs down the side of your body which is not pleasant on a freezing Melbourne morning. I use it in conjunction with a regular deodorant stick so can’t comment on the effectiveness. I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. Therefore…

Won’t repurchase.

Avene Thermal Spring Water:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; this is no ordinary water in a can. This is magic water! I have already repurchase TWO of the big 300ml bottles but can’t find this size in a trial pack (which is how I originally got my hands on it). And it’s $10 by itself. Not a bargain. So even though I won’t be able to travel with this bottle anymore, I love the product. (The 300ml bottles are two for $19.99 at Chemist Warehouse which IS a bargain!)

Already repurchased.

Natio Young Oil Free Moisturiser:

I have had this for a while but I remember buying it in a rush because I just needed an “everyday” moisturiser. I would apply it before my SPF and it was fine. I didn’t really notice anything particularly oil free about the formula but it was ok. Only recently however I have noticed that this products pills. Like crazy! Maybe because it’s old but omg I couldn’t believe it! So it’s a no from me. I just used it up so I could stop using it!

Won’t repurchase.

Glow Lab Night Cream:

I discovered Glow Lab when I got a mini pack for Christmas and have since repurchased the full size night cream and serum. This night cream was a nice, thick consistency without being sticky. It isn’t overly scented either. So it’s nice. And when used with the serum I think they make a lovely combo. However, there are so many night creams in the drugstore and in my own collection, and so…

Won’t repurchase (at least, until I’ve finished what I have!)

Glow Lab Serum:

As I mentioned above, I’ve used this before buying this full size. It’s a simple serum, I won’t say I saw any outrageous benefits from it but I liked it. However, as I finished the bottle, it was really hard to get the last bits out which felt like such a waste. So, for the same reason as the night cream-

Won’t repurchase.

Rimmel True Match Foundation:

This foundation, I won’t lie, I share with my mum! So we got through it a lot quicker than I would’ve by myself.

I really enjoy this foundation, and say it’s middle of the road in every way. Not too matte nor dewy, not too light nor heavy coverage. Just right. But, like most products, I have so many other foundations to try (including a back up of this one!) so I…

Won’t repurchase (yet!)

The Body Shop Powder Foundation:

As you can see, this foundation has been well loved… and sadly has come to the end of it’s days. I actually continued using it for about 2 months after this photo was taken- can you believe! I got every bit of life out of it possible haha! I have adored it, it’s absolutely perfect for lightly dusting over the top of foundation to matte down the look. I panic-purchased an Australis powder to replace my beloved Body Shop one, but 100% without a shadow of a doubt…

Will repurchase.

A dodgy but more accurate picture of the current state of this powder!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara:

This is my go-to mascara. It was sooooo hyped up a few years ago and when I first tried it, and I actually didn’t love it. I think there’s a knack to applying it. But now, I would say this is my ride or die mascara. I am comfortable using it for a bold lash, or just a light coat for everyday wear. Sadly, I had to throw this out as it was getting dry and crunchy beyond repair. Once I work through my pile (no joke) of backup mascaras, I…

Will repurchase.

Avene Cleanance Expert:

I first used this brand when my Dermatologist gave me a sample, but this product I’ve just finished I purchased in the full size. I actually have a backup mini to continue using now as well. Yay! Really gentle on the skin and effective overnight at reducing the appearance of pimples but not at making them disappear altogether. I want to experiment with other products but I do enjoy this, so…

Will repurchase.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face and Body 50+ SPF:

My ultimate SPF! I’ve purchased so many bottles of this stuff during my time! But I’m excited to get on with a new SPF (nothing crazy, still Neutrogena!) and test it out. I find this perfect for summertime but it would be great to add some hydration to my skin in combination with SPF in the cooler months. Is this next part even a question?

Will repurchase (forever and ever and ever.)

Phew! That feels like sooooo many products but I would say it took about 6 months to use up most of these products- so that seems fair.

And now, onto the next lot haha!

What have you hit pan on recently? Tell me in the comments!

Week Latte #15

ROLLY Mag

Hello Friday!

I have a super exciting weekend ahead- a concert and a city staycay… which means a trip to Priceline Bourke St Mall 💁‍♀️

And it’s been a big week so I’m excited to have some fun!

Hope you are all well.

I have saved heaps of pics from Insta this week so have a lot to share.

Speaking of Insta… they have turned off the ability for your followers to see how many likes a photo has received. You are the only one who can now access this info. Thoughts?

Lots of people have said it’s great because brands can still access the info for statistics, it reduces the pressure, it reduces our reliance on likes validating self worth etc.

My opinion?

I never associated likes with my self esteem. I don’t understand how people do. I know I am more than the amount of likes I get.

So I actually like seeing the amount of likes, just out of curiosity.

That said, I don’t think I’ll miss the feature either.

However, it does make me sad that the numbers can affect people’s mental health so much. So if this helps, so be it!

I think for businesses, it will be another story… we’ll have to wait and see.

Let’s chat in the comments!

Enjoy…

I have a satin pillow case from Cotton On Body and really enjoy how it feels… so this is an interesting read!

Found this incredible online magazine WinWin through @jessica_riga – obsessed!

Listen to this podcast featuring Rust Creative. And more from Rust here.

This look by Australis! I have this palette, picked up one for a friend’s birthday, and if you’re quick you can get it from Priceline half price (ends today!)See my recommendations here.

New from Essano.

Love this glossy lid by Mecca. Speaking of- what did you pick up in the Mecca sale that launched yesterday? I was on the site at 7am (when it began!) and missed out on everything I wanted. They must’ve been sneaky and hyped it up but only had very little stock. Seriously disappointed.

I have been loving seeing your #pricelinehauls this week! How good is Katie’s 😍 I’m hoping to find that The Balm palette in store today!

And Hiuy’s Priceline suggestions 🤗

Career confidence by Emma… this read is everything!!

This lippie is divine!

Relatable 😂

10 Step K Beauty Routine by Nicola (who looks *good* in a face mask… how!!?)

This new Nude by Nature eyebrow set looks fab!

So beautiful.

Earlier this week I shared my new blogging series, “Blogging BTS“. Mary discusses a similar topic in her video here.

Blogging BTS #1

ROLLY Mag

Hey hey friends!

There is no rule book when it comes to blogging and Instagram, but one thing that is kind of “unspoken” is that you keep brand deals hush-hush until it’s time to post about them.

And, you don’t hear much at all about what is the “behind the scenes” of a blog of IG.

It’s always “I’m working on a secret project! I can’t tell you about it yet!”

And that’s cool, sometimes projects DO have to be kept secret for a certain time.

But also, some projects aren’t secret.

You don’t know any thing about them and then BAM! Your favourite Instagrammer has a sponsored post up and you’re like “cool, but how did this come about?”

At least, that’s what I think!

Soooooo I wanted to share some of the BTS from my own blogging journey.

Keep in mind, I’ve only being doing this for seven months… and I’m still learning- a lot!

I mentioned this in a Week Latte post, that “a brand” contacted me and asked if I’d like to trial a product of their in exchange for a review and social media coverage.

That brand, was Subi.

I had seen Subi on my Instagram feed, but hadn’t really looked twice because pimple patches are something I had never tried before.

I let you guys know in that post that I was deliberating accepting their offer.

Some advice from my blogging besties K and Cortney, had me eventually reply to Subi saying “yes please!” (And then I told you here!)

Why?

I get pimples. These products are designed for people like me. Why shouldn’t I try them?

I’m yet to receive the product, but when I do, you now know my reasoning as to why.

Of course, when I communicated with the brand I made it clear that my review would be genuine and honest- of which they happily agreed too.

I told K about this, and she said she’d be interested in trying them.

So… I emailed Subi and let them know I had a friend who would love to try their stuff.

Literally a few minutes later, K got an emails from Subi offering her to try the products.

I was so excited for her!

See how if I had of gone through the process myself and kept it a “secret” I never would’ve been able to connect K and Subi.

And I am allllll about us micro influencers (yeah- I said it!!) supporting each other.

To further include you guys (my followers) on this particular brand journey, I posted this to my Instagram stories.

I was thinking about this and I could’ve kept that thought to myself (lol weird working but you get me!)

But! I wanted to share it because it gives you some insight and let’s you know you can expect me to talk about Subi in the near future. That way, my hashtag gifted post won’t be completely out of blue.

I would, personally, appreciate that as a consumer/audience/follower myself.

I’m excited and nervous to see how you, lovely followers, react to this style of post.

Do you like it? Are you curious to know more? Tell me in the comments below!

And, I’m kinda thinking we make this into a series- I sure have plenty more stories to tell!

I’d also love to get other bloggers to share their stories. What do you think?

Lots of love xx

Hand cream isn’t just for Grandmas (Du’it: Review)

ROLLY Mag

Hands up if you love skincare? 🙋‍♀️

Hands up if you love skincare but often forget that “skincare” includes parts of your body that aren’t your face? 🙋‍♀️

#Guilty!

In Winter, it is often too cold to bother with full-body moisturising. All I want to do is go straight from the shower, to pjs, to my bed. Relatable?

But you guys will know from my June Editor’s Letter (here & also lol forgot to do one this month 😬) that taking care of skin other than on my face was a goal of mine.

Happy to say, that thanks to @duitau, I’ve achieved that! Hand cream is not something I would usually pick up for myself. To me, it’s in the category of “gifts for grandma”. The packaging isn’t necessarily *aesthetic* and nothing about it screams “BUY ME” when you see this on the shelf.

Let me tell you, friends, this product ain’t just for grandmas. “Tough Hands For Her” sat on my bedside table and every night (since Friday 5th when I received this!) I applied the hand cream before I went to bed. In the morning, hello baby’s bum hands!

My job is pretty physical and I do a lot of cutting and folding of paper, tearing open boxes, touching stickers and things… so it’s not uncommon for me to get home from a 9 hour shift and have a new paper cut or 12. At the same time, I have my hands on full display to customers as I point here, pass them this or that etc. I put in the effort to paint my nails, but why not the rest of my hand care? This is kinda why I love this handcream so much. It’s minimal effort for maximum results.

It’s very subtly scented, nothing offensive at all. It’s not overly thick or sticky, and “soaks in” almost instantly once rubbed in (which is easy to do!). And, a little goes a long way!

Similarly, I exfoliate my face 2-3 times a week, and my body *occasionally* before shaving but that’s about where it ends.

It was definitely harder to add the Tough Scrub to my every-second-day-routine, but just like the hand cream, I saw big results!

The scrub works similarly a face scrub- removing dead skin and rejuvenating the appearance.

However, I have only used this once. So, the test will be if it’s something I can continue to use on a regular basis. Hand scrubs don’t come as easily to my body care habits as say, brushing my teeth! So time will tell.

And finally, the Vitamin E Cream. Even though I am *loving* using a hand cream now (it makes me feel like an adult haha) this product is the standout in the range!

I have recently started using a whole new array of skin products so it’s hard to say if my skin is enjoying that or this product in particular, but whatever it is, it’s a great combo!

The instructions direct you to apply this face cream twice a day or as needed. It also said it works well as a base under makeup. My eyes nearly popped out of my head!

Yay!

So I quickly discovered my perfect use for this cream.

I pop this on, followed by SPF and then concealer and powder.

My GOSH!

It has a very subtle scent (barely noticeable) and an almost tacky consistency. It’s not at all uncomfortable on the skin. It dries quickly but you can feel that it gives your makeup something to stick to.

I am so impressed with this product. Not only is a it a fabulous primer, it has left my skin looking clear, soft and even.

I saw it when shopping at my local Chemist Warehouse the other day in the body care aisle and honestly, wouldn’t have looked twice at this product if I hadn’t tried it.

I would honestly recommend that everyone tries this Vitamin E cream, because it is sooooo effective and so cheap.

If you’re struggling to find a primer you like- try this!

If you struggle with problem skin and are afraid of trying anything new- try this!

Because remember, it is skin care first. It’s not a makeup product, by definition. Benefit for us is, it works like a makeup product whilst having the benefits of skincare!

Week Latte #14

ROLLY Mag

Hi all, Happy Friday!

This week has been big one for me- socially, professionally and blogging-ly 😉

Notably, I reached 1000 followers on Instagram!

O M G!!!!

I have been pinching myself about it all week.

The push to get those final few followers I truly put down to the support from my Instagram community. So many accounts were tagging me on their stories being like ‘follow Rolly Mag’ and honestly- I felt SO LOVED AND SUPPORTED. Tears were shed.

It truly is a magically place, the Aussie beauty community. I love the little tribe of people I have connected to my account. It really is a special place.

To celebrate, I have a giveaway going live at 7pm tomorrow (Saturday 13th)!! Follow me on Instagram here to be involved! (*I’m so excited to share this with you guys*)!!!!!!!

An update on last week’s post… I decided to take the product that a brand offered me (you know the one I was unsure about?). The brand was really lovely and I’m excited to trial their product now. I’ll talk about this more once the product arrives.

Also an update… I’m still struggling to sort this blog out haha. Coordinating blog posts with images is proving tricky. But I’m just letting myself be ok with the fact that it is taking way longer than I’d like. No pressure- just creation. (At least that is what I tell myself!)

My absolute favourite post this week is from K of @allmyshittymakeup. She has created this genius table of skincare products that you can essentially build your own combo of toners, serums, cleansers, moisturisers, eye creams, SPF and masks… for UNDER $100!! Now, isn’t that what we like to hear! I’ve never seen something like this one before, I am honestly in love with the idea! K is so clever!

On a similar note of mind-blowing-awe-inspiring ideas, I saw this Bloomette product on @wildlingsofmine (use her code WOM15 for 15% off) and am like, how did I ever live without this? Baby hairs, be gone!

Mco Beuaty is half price at Woolies right now!

I saw Spider-Man: Far From Home this week. Wow. Without spoiling it for you, I was sat there at the end like “wow, what a happy ending, loved that movie, I feel good inside!’ FOOL! Marvel were having NONE of that. The post credit scenes will shake you to your core, my friends.

I also used ShopBack for the first time today. I booked accomodation through Booking.com and got 6% cash back! I am so impressed! DM me on Instagram or leave a comment if you would like a referral code and we both get $5 in our accounts- win!

If you like my chatty style blogs, you’ll love this new post from Cortney!

Watch @kelly_mccarren shave her face… this is something I really want to do but I’m scared! Have you tried it? What was your experience?

I am obsessed with this look by @bianamelb. I have these clips from Kmart…. probs will be back for more.

I got an exciting delivery from Natura Maga this week! I’ll have a review of the lip balm and solid perfume to come, but in the meantime… check them out here.

If you don’t follow Sasha already, please do. She’s literally the thrifting QUEEN! Sasha found a Coach bag in a Brighton thrift store and it is goals. She also found a Gucci belt. Have I proven to you yet that she is the Queen? 😂

You all know how much I love Tina. And you all know how much I love You Beauty. Well, this week they came together and made pure beauty magic! It’s a podcast… but it’s pretty close to magical IMO 💁‍♀️

Look what’s coming to V&ME soon!!

How flipping pretty is the ‘Hero‘ bag from Olivia & Co. They have some fab sales (see image below!) on at the moment- go show them some love!

That’s all from me this week!

As always, let’s chat in the comments! xx

My current night time skin care routine

ROLLY Mag

Okey dokey, guys. I shared this on my IG (albeit a while ago!) so I thought it’s only fair to share it here too…

*My current night time beauty routine*

Face washed in the shower with Simple Foaming Cleanser (deffo called something else but you get the jist). Had this in my collection for a while… didn’t realise it was foaming. Don’t usually enjoy those sorts of products though this one is fine I won’t repurchase. I use my TK Maxx bargain find facial brush to do this.

Every third day or so (or when I’ve had my makeup on since 7:30am and it’s now 11pm) I’ll use the OG Sukin Facial Scrub… freaking love this stuff. Have the ‘green’ range to try next.

Once out of the shower, I use the Avene Cleanance Expert on my spotty areas, quickly followed by the Avene Thermal Water aka magic water in a can.

Thennnn it’s onto the Glow Lab Serum… doesn’t feel amazing on the skin but it smells ok and it’s cheap and from Woolies so it’s a win for now.

I try to space out all these steps so that everything gets a good chance to sink in and I’m not just wiping it off on my pillow, but it all depends on what time I had my shower etc.

I finally apply my Glow Lab Night Cream. This has a nice texture and works well in combination with the serum… my skin always feels nice after using it.

I first tried Glow Lab in a mini pack and then repurchased these products in the full size. They’ve been nice but I’m not going to repurchase anytime soon purely because I think there are so many serum/night cream options for me to try… particularly because these are not OMG I LOVE.

Exciting new step time: SLUGGING. In short, slugging is applying a barrier cream at night, after you’ve slathered on all your other skincare. The barrier cream works to lock moisture in to your skin. You could use Trilogy Everything Balm (like @breeze_beauty_loves) or Elizabeth Arden 24 Hour Cream, but I do this with Weleda Skin Food. (Btw, all this knowledge comes from the You Beauty podcast with Leigh Campbell and Kelly McKarren- go listen and thank me later).

I try to apply this at least half an hour before bed so that it can soak in a bit, but as we know, Weleda is THICK. You do feel a bit like a grease ball but it smells so good so not really complaining.

Next morning, you wake up with *the* softest skin, I kid you not.

‘Slugging’ sounds horrendous, but it is truly a miracle. I wish I could do it every day but that may be OTT, so I treat it like a sleeping mask and do it once or twice a week.

It didn’t make my pimples better or worse- so no complaints there. It did, however, make that annoying texture I’ve had on my skin for months better. Yay!

I did find that I had to just wipe off some excess the next morning just with warm water on a face washer.

But yes, do recommend. Highly. Slugging is life.

The final step in my night time routine is some good old Lanolips Coconutter Lip Balm. I find this much too heavy for day time use, but perfect to slather on at the end of the day to wake up with smooth lips. Good times.

I will admit, it’s rare for me to have routine that is a consistent as this. Which is why I’m documenting it hahah. I really want to finish up the Glow Lab products so I can move onto my Neutrogena Hydro Boost range… I’ll of course keep you all updated.

Have you tried slugging? Or, have you even heard of it? I hadn’t until the podcast!
