Reverse Foundation: Review

ROLLY Mag

If you haven’t heard of “reverse foundation” then don’t worry, because neither had I until a week ago (it’s cosy under this rock, right? 😜)

I discovered it through Jamie Paige (which I spoke about here) but I believe it was “invented” by Samantha Ravndahl.

The basic premise is that you apply every base product but foundation to your face first. I believe it works best with cream products; so that means your bronzer, blush, highlight go on first, then you add foundation lightly over the top of these areas.

The idea is that you only use foundation where you *really* need it.

Forgive me, but I cannot remember where concealer belongs in this application process.

Intrigued, I worked up the courage to try it myself.

These are the products I used!

ModelsOwn Contour Stick:

I picked this up purely to use for this look, as I had no cream bronzer/contour. It was $3 in the Priceline clearance sale. And honestly, I’m glad I only payed that much for it! First impressions- the packaging is so plasticky and flimsy. I couldn’t wind the product up or down without it smearing all over the edges of the packaging. Not fun.

You look kinda crazy as your first apply all these products. So that’s why I was concerned that this contour looked “muddy” when I put it on. But later, as I was applying foundation over the top, this contour was slipping and sliding all over my face and it was a serious case of contour gone horribly wrong.

And on top of that, it had a orange sort of tinge to it as I buffed it into my skin.

Gotta say, I am not a fan.

Revlon Instant Cheek Maker:

I’ve actually reviewed this product before (here) and my thoughts are relatively the same. It’s pretty but application is a STRUGGLE! In my review I said the colour is too intense for me- I actually think it is very subtle upon first application but it is very pink in appearance. Once I put the foundation on (very lightly, mind you) the blush pretty much disappeared! I’ve discovered now, that this product doesn’t work under or over foundation (for me, at least.) Under and it disappears. Over and it smudges all the foundation out of the way (as in, it doesn’t just sit atop).

Mco Beauty Highlight & Glow Stick:

I bought this from Woolies ages ago, when Leigh first recommended it on the You Beauty podcast. But I’ve been yet to use it.

It is much more “gold” than I anticipated. I was expecting something champagne-like. Whilst I didn’t love this on my skin (I just think it doesn’t go as well with my red undertone, pale complexion as it would with Leigh’s olive skin) it was the only product that actually showed up under the foundation (without looking like mud!). It gave a really lovely glow! It’s so cheap and readily available from Woolies. I’ll definitely keep using this product but won’t repurchase.

Ulta3 Fresh Faced Serum Foundation:

First time using this and I have to say, I am really impressed! A little goes a long way and it really does feel like a serum so it applies very nicely to the skin. I used a beauty sponge to apply, but am intrigued to continue experimenting with this product.

The Quick Flick:

I had all intentions to try these Quick Flick eyeliner stamps, but the new “reverse foundation” testing was enough for one day, so I gave this a miss. If you want to try them though, do so with Cortney‘s 10% discount code “QUICKCORTNEY”!

Obviously, a photo of my face would be great to show you the finished *look* but as I am still anonymous on here, I can’t do that. I’m sorry!

To wrap it up, I think next time I try this I will go lighter on the contour and heavier on the blush.

I definitely will try this again one day when I’m at home with no where to be. I don’t feel confident enough right now (in my ability or in the results) to do this for a “going out” look.

Nevertheless… practise makes progress!

I’d love to know if you have any cream product recommendations? I’m usually scared of them- I need some tips! Let me know in the comments!

Full face of first impressions #2

ROLLY Mag

Well, *almost* a full face šŸ’ā€ā™€ļø

Physicians Formula bronzer / here (but US only sorry)

As eyeshadow, gorgeous colour! Especially with the top layer of shimmer that is on the product. I talk about the staying power next…

Essence primer / here

It’s blue, you guys! Crazy. It has a sunscreen like texture and smell, but it dries down like a primer. And, not sure if it is the PF bronzer or the combo of that with the primer, but my eyeshadow was looking as good as new even 10 hours later! (I swiped the primer across my eyes too!)

Super happy with this!

Essence liquid makeup / couldn’t find online in Aus!

Very sheer coverage, not sure if this could even be built up. Definitely had a matte finish, as the packaging promises.

Nice for everyday wear and very affordable if that’s what you’re looking for.

And for the price and coverage, last a few hours in the warm weather relatively well.

This is a hard one- but I will probably keep wearing it because I have it, but wouldn’t buy it.

Covergirl Lip Primer / here (so Covergirl is available at Chemist Warehouse now apparently!)

I thought lip balm was a suitable lip primer… boy I was wrong! This product is actually amazing. Something about the consistency is different to a lip balm. Super comfortable and even though I tried a new lippie (so can’t say which product made it long lasting!) I noticed a big difference in the application and longevity.

Revolution Matte Liquid Lip and Lip Liner Duo / here

The lip liner is really lovely and creamy, and I like the the liquid lip itself. It’s a comfortable matte and lasted quite well. But I am quite fair and so I’m just not sure this shade suits me. But I would definitely recommend it!

Thanks for reading! I am loving this new series ā¤ļø

Full face of first impressions #1

ROLLY Mag

Ok, so maybe not a full face… but key players!

And, ok, maybe not “new in” more like, “products I’ve had for ages and am only using for the first time”.

Yeah, that’s more like it. (But a tad too long for a title, agree?)

The moral of the story: new things, all cheap, all relatively difficult to get your hands on in store. Soz.

Ulta3 Serum Foundation in 1. ivory // buy it here

– Picture credit: Emily at @emmiesbeautylife // read her review here

– buildable coverage

– very brightening with a dewy finish that became more matte as it dried down

– gives an almost “filtered” effect in blurring the appearance of your skin

– so affordable

– very very veryyyyyy limited colour range

– after 8 hours of wear, it had begun to slightly cling around my nose and almost totally wore off on my chin, but still had an overall “fresh glow” to my complexion. Loveeeeee!

Ulta3 2-in-1 brows in brunette // buy it here

– I normally go for blonde in brow products but find they often have an red undertone, so chose this one instead (that and it was the only option at the store hah)

– really enjoyed the crayon end of this, however if you miss your eyebrow (like I did) it’s hard to blend the product

– the clear gel was nice, but didn’t dry very well… I noticed it went a bit tacky like dry PVA glue and I had to pull it off… but maybe I just applied too much in that particular spot because the rest of my brows were fine!

Barry M Crushed Jewel Cream Eyeshadow in 1. Duvet Day // buy it in store at Big W

– very wet formula that is difficult to apply

– no matter if I used my finger, a brush or the applicator, it seemed to wipe off more product that in out on

– however once dried, it stayed put

– wouldn’t choose this colour again, I’d prefer something more bronzey

Essence “I need a miracle” mascara // buy it in store at Priceline and Target

– love the brush shape

– gave good length

– didn’t feel overly voluminous though

– didn’t live up to the hype in my opinion, after first use

Flower Beauty Light Illusions Concealer in Fair // buy it here

– this product has so much hype!

– it did really impress me with the full coverage and brightening effect

– it did however crease under my eyes almost immediately! And I don’t really have under eye creases!

Have you used any of these products?

Going ā€œout outā€ makeup

ROLLY Mag

On Saturday night, I went ā€˜out out’ for the first time in quite a while. We were celebrating a friend’s 19th birthday so it gave me the perfect opportunity to actually use some of my makeup.

I thought I’d run you through what was on my face.

Some things didn’t change from my usual routine, including primer. My old faithful, OMShe.

Next I used my NYX colour corrector, also an everyday item.

Then I did something wild, I got out my Sukin Face Mist and covered my beauty blender with it. I was so proud of myself for remembering to do this- thanks to Alana, because I was watching this video of hers whilst simultaneously getting ready.

Lol, jokes on me through because I didn’t even end up using the sponge.

I used my fingers to apply the Innoxa Foundation. I have not used this in a long time, but remember really loving it.

Normally, I wouldn’t use an SPF foundation for a night out but I really just wanted to use this!

It is such a good, light-medium dewy base. Love.

For concealer I used a $4 Target brush and Rimmel Wake Me Up.

Followed by my kabuki brush and powder foundation, both from The Body Shop.

Here, things get a little different.

I mean, it’s my same old Rimmel bronzer, but I haven’t worn this for, 2 months maybe? Love it.

Followed by my trusty Sportsgirl highlight. Normally I use this as eyeshadow as well, but thought I mixed it up.

I used the rose gold Ulta3 shadow stick on my lids, Innisfree brow mascara on my eyebrows and L’Oreal Telescopic on my lashes.

On my lips, two new products! The Australis universal liner- had really high hopes for this but honestly, I’m disappointed. It is such a tiny, thin application that the product actually snapped. So I rubbed that chunk into my lips with my finger. It was nice but I don’t really want to rely on that for application. For lippie, I went with the Stylondon that Nicky kindly gifted me. It is actually a dark, pinky nude on me which I wasn’t expecting but ADORE! I never knew I needed a shade like this in my life.

However, I can’t comment on how either of them wore because I didn’t touch up all night nor even look at myself in the mirror. I’ll put them to the test again next weekend šŸ˜‰

Thanks for reading!

#PROJECTPAN MONTH 2

ROLLY Mag

Hi everyone, March has gone so quickly and doing this Project pan post sort of wasn’t at the top of my mind. Oops. But here we are…. better late than never.

I have two #ProjectPan posts on the blog already, so you can catchup and read them here.

Initially, I thought that I would have monthly pans… but that has turned out to be extremely unfeasible. I haven’t hit pan/finished any of the products that I’ve shared here previously. This is because…

  1. I don’t wear makeup enough to get through my products monthly and 2. when I do where makeup, I only need such a small amount!

I was making quite a dint in my primer and BB cream during February, but i think wearing makeup more frequently freaked my skin out. So I’ve pulled it right back, which is making it hard to use up those products.

But! I do have two new skincare products that I’m hoping to use up by the end of the year (rather than the end of the month!)

Sukin Signature Hydrating Mist Toner: I use this to set my makeup, but honestly, I often forget! It smells delish and is really refreshing. I wanted to buy the other scent however I thought if I could challenge myself to actually make use of this… then I’d treat myself. Anddddd i think it would be fun to try using it for it’s purpose as a toner.

Simple Cleansing Oil: I bought this in the hope that I would start doubling cleansing. That has not happened because honestly, this product smells horrible! It’s really not an enjoyable experience… however, it does get makeup off well. I’m not totally put off from cleansing oils, I want to try this Sukin one and this Swisse one… but I will definitely not be repurchasing. I think to get my use out of it, I will use it in the shower, as I find it a bit messy haha but that could just be me. Hence, I’m keen to try the Swisse one because it has a spray application.

So there we go! How have you been going with your #ProjectPan. Let me know in the comments šŸ™‚

#ProjectPan Month 1

ROLLY Mag

Hello friends!

In an effort to be a more consumer this year, I am joining the Instagram community’s hashtag #ProjectPan and trying to ‘hit pan’ and/or ‘use up’ some of my makeup products.

Easier said than done, particularly when I rarely actually ever wear makeup.

Since stating my new jobs, I have been wearing makeup about 4 times per week (very out of the ordinary for me!)

So now that I am wearing it more frequently, I am hoping to atcually make a dent in my collection. However, I have noticed my skin has become *textured*- perhaps as a result of makeup? It’s not pimples as such, but agh I can’t explain it any other way that texture!! It could be due to other factors, but I am definitely contributing more frequent use of makeup as one!

So, for this post I thought I would quickly update you on the products I posted in my #ProjectPan initial blog post… as well as some new additions!

My primer, BB cream and bronzer I showed you in that post still haven’t been used up. However, I’m not upset about it- I knew this would happen as I simply don’t wear makeup often enough to use it up in a month. However, using it the last two weeks (at least 4 times per week), I have noticed a significant reduction in the products… and hope that by next month, I will have finished the BB cream at least.

The primer is hard to use up because you only use such a little bit at a time. And the bronzer, I would like to hit pan on by the end of the year… that sounds crazy but I think it’s also reflective of my makeup usage haha.

Two new additions to my #ProjectPan line up are skincare related.

First, this Natio Young Oil Free Moisturiser. It does the job, but it isn’t particularly indulgent or pampering (understandable, considering the target demographic.) So I am keen to use this up so I can move onto my Glow Lab night cream!

And secondly, this Sukin Natural Deodorant I have had for agesssss. Similarly to primer, I use it frequently (ie. everyday) but only a little bit at time. Personally, this is the only natural deodorant I’ve ever tried. I like how it smells, the spray application is a little tricky but I don’t find it drips too much, yet I do use it in combination with my usual Nivea deodorant. I would repurchase for the smell alone, and because it is rather cheap, however, not for effectiveness.

How are you going with your #ProjectPan? Comment below… and I’ll see you again in month’s time for another update!

Weekly Makeup Basket

ROLLY Mag

AKA. My go-tos!

I love the idea of a ā€œbeauty basketā€- holding all your go to makeup that you can add and swap items out of, on a weekly basis. So I thought I’d try with my own this week… and aim to narrow it down to five products, as I’ve seen on IG.

My primer, bronzer and BB cream are all from my Project Pan post. I’m really trying to get through them, however on holidays I’m barely wearing makeup once a week, so I don’t think I’ll be finishing these up this month.

My highlighter is from Sportsgirl and you can’t get it anymore but I love it! And it’s lasted me forever. I use this as eyeshadow too- love!

And mascara is my trusty Maybelline Lash sensational. I don’t like this for ā€œstatementā€ lashes- I find it too sticky. But if you apply it really carefully and lightly, it gives great length and bold colour to your lashes!

So I’ve realised that what I’ve mentioned above equals 5 products… oops. So I’m pretending primer is skincare and so my fifth makeup product is my Innisfree brow gel! I loveeeeee this stuff- makes brows so easy to do! (And this spoolie (?? Spooly??) is just on the end of a Kmart eyebrows pencil… I have since bought a pretty and proper one from Sportsgirl.

Of course, SPF and a tinted lip balm (Burt’s Bees in Red Dahlia preferably) are also included.

So it turns out I’m bad at this and couldn’t narrow it down to just five products- but you get the idea! A simple makeup routine that you don’t even have to think about- that’s my kinda thing. Although, I would like to get more creative with my makeup as I have so many products!

But for now, tell me in the comments what your go to make up items are? Thanks for reading!

Revlon K-Beauty Review

ROLLY Mag

Welcome back to #MakeupMonday! Today, a review of two new-in Revlon products- both purchased in a recent Priceline sale.

Revlon Photoready Instant Cheek Maker Blush and Highlight Duo:

The colour on this product is insane! Absolutely love it! I like using highlight as eyeshadow too and this creamy product is perfect… except application will be a little tricky. As it is on my actual check. Perhaps it’s just my face shape, but I find this tricky to get the angle right and get both the blush and highlight in the right place in one swipe. I sort of have to angle it and do one at a time. Also, I don’t often use blush- and when I do it’s very subtle… so this heavier colour is a bit different for me. However, I love this colour and it will just take some getting used to. I would love to know the best way for blending cream products- fingers? Brush? Sponge? It will take some practise. However, don’t let that deter you because the colour is beautiful!

Revlon Kiss Cushion Lip Tint:

I don’t know if it’s because I’m used to such a wide colour range in other lip products but I thought this range was a bit limited! I would have preferred something pink-ier than this but there wasn’t much in between this and bright pink! The cushion applicator is a bit tricky on my thin lips however once it’s on- it’s on! Long lasting, luckily, because I find it hard enough to apply. However I do like the colour, and it’s a fun product because it’s so different to anything I’ve used before.

In summary: I *like* both products but don’t think I’ll repurchase! I love Revlon, and I think their foray into ā€œK Beautyā€ has been brave- and successful! However, these particular products just aren’t for me. If you have a few more skills/experience in the makeup department- you could do great things with this! However, ease of application is what makes me hesitant to recommend these products (despite their best intentions.) This said, I will keep trying to use these products (#ProjectPan) and I’m hoping I’ll learn to love them. I’ll keep you updated, of course šŸ˜‰

Have you tried these products? Thoughts?

ā€œNew Inā€ Makeup Haul

ROLLY Mag

Another ā€œnew inā€ makeup haul from 2018!

Myer

Chi Chi Buffing Brush: I’ve been looking for a brush like this forever and just bought it because I couldn’t find ā€œthe perfect oneā€… it’s nice but the handle is quite long… I’ve since seen that they sell a smaller one which would work better!

Chi Chi CC Cream: there were too options and I choose the Caviar one because it was moisturising whereas the other was anti ageing! This reminds me of the IT Cosmetics CC Cream- even in packaging- so I’m excited to try it!

Revlon Brush & Sponge Daily Cleanser: This is probably a scam product but I like the idea of spritzing my brushes everyday to make them ā€œcleanā€ between washes… I’m really just a sucker for spray products! It was on sale though so don’t worry!

Kmart

Facial Cleansing Brush: a face mask applicator… not a necessity but I’d bought two Sukin masks and thought it was fun. I wanted a two pack from Sportsgirl but they weren’t in my local store.

Big W

Chapstick Lip Oil: I’ve seen this online for ages but never in stores I was so happy to finally find it… but wish I got the peach flavour! I’m such a fan of lip oils šŸ˜

Barry M Gloss Me Up Lip Kit: I needed a lip liner, ok!? So I bought this kit and I’m so excited to use it! Lip products are my favourite to buy though I don’t use them as often as I should (although my lip balm collection is very, very frequently used!!)

Makeup sponge: just needed a new one! Although I broke my own rule of only buying things on sale… I got this full price for about $4 which isn’t a lot but of course after I bought it, every makeup sponge eve was on sale šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø Lesson learnt!

2019 Beauty Wishlist

ROLLY Mag

Happy #MakeupMonday everyone! Today I will be sharing my 2019 makeup wishlist! You can read all about it here on the blog, or follow along on Instagram (@rolly.mag) throughout the day as I post my wishlist for four categories: lips, skin, eyes and palettes!

I actually had to check on my calendar what day it was- NYE! So if you’re looking for a makeup look, some of the sparkle featured throughout this blog post could be right up your street! *think Fenty Beauty lip gloss, Physicians Formula highlight & Sportgirl eyeshadow!* (Can you tell I’m a sucker for some sparkle?!)

We begin with my personal favourite: LIPS! I am a huge lip balm fan- with a slightly ridiculous collection of lip balms… one for every possible situation 😜 The Bite beauty lip balm, for example, would be the perfect addition to my handbag. How sleek is that packaging! Burtsbees is a new found fave of mine this year & I’m hanging to try this lippie. Australis lip chameleon. I am just so intrigued to test this. I know it’s on sale at Priceline right now so I’m hoping to get my hands on it! And finally, Fenty Beauty would be the ultimate luxury lip product for me- and I own nothing like this! Fingers crossed it comes on sale!

… next is skin! This Revlon primer is a favourite of one of my besties so I hope to give it a try on her recommendation! NAPOLEON PERDIS Complex Skin Renewal Hyaluronate Serum because serums make me feel sophisticated and do a lot of my combination skin. Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater looks so dreamy… as does the entire range but I picked just one for the sake of this! Mecca actually sell a three pack of these sprays however I’m having trouble getting my hands on it as it’s sold out almost everywhere near me! And finally, This Works pillow spray… or really anything from this brand! I’m all about everyday pampering & sprays do just the trick!

Next is EYES! Although technically this Olay deep hydrating eye gel could be considered skincare… I love eye creams, they feel like such a pampering skincare step! This Essence mascara is so popular it’s sold out online (Priceline)!!! But I’ve heard such good things about it & at such a cheap price, I’m just itching to get my hands on it! Benefit Gimme brow- simply because it’s a cult favourite and I’m curious to see what all the fuss is about! And finally, I think this Rimmel wonderwing eyeliner would be the perfect foray into the world of eyeliner… a place I’m slightly scared to venture in to!

Finally, we have reached palettes! Models Own aqua proof is appealing to me because of price, packaging and colours- some safe bets and also some experimental colours! Again, this sportsgirl glitterati palette is relatively cheap and so pretty. I’m a sucker for some sparkle. Physicians formula is a brand I’m eager to try in 2019- and I think this all-rounder face palette is the perfect way to test the brand. And finally, Covergirl sunsets. I saw the in Jamie Page’s recent collaboration video with the brand and it is so wearable! Big W seem to be the only place I’ve seen it, yet I still haven’t bought it! Hope you enjoyed this wish list, it’s entirely drug store!!! My favourite!!

• let me know if you’ve tried any of these products & what’s on your wishlist?? •
