Week Latte #1

ROLLY Mag

Welcome to the first edition of “Week Latte“! A weekly favourites post that will be up every Friday.

ā€œWeek Latteā€- all the best from the internet this week, no froth.

(Although technically speaking, lattes do a froth lol). I just thought this name had a fun ring to it, instead of ā€œfavouritesā€ or something regular. Keeping it fresh ya know. Anywhoooo, lets get to it!

These posts are always my favourites to read on other blogs & I especially like finding new blogs to read through these posts. In the future, I’ll bulk up the posts maybe with a personal weekly recap, things I’m loving, etc etc- so your suggestions are always welcome! Enjoy!

I realllllly want to try this eye look!

This bag is the perfect everyday tote, not too big but big enough for a water bottle. I have a black tote that is nice- looking but a bit uncomfortable to wear. I also have a pink tote that fits everything but the kitchen sink. And so this bag would be the perfect in between. Plus, I don’t have this colour sooooo… it’s a necessity. Just waiting for it to come on sale šŸ˜…

I love Refinery 29’s ā€œMoney Diariesā€ so this similar article was right up my street! Is it because I’m nosey ? Maybe šŸ˜‚ But I also see it as a form of vicarious living.

Loved this post, something society needs to be reminded of. I’m only 18 and every time there is alcohol in a situation people hound me ā€œwhy aren’t you drinking? Cmon have a drink!ā€ Do I have this ahead of me my whole life?

I’m very much enjoying al the spare time I have found since leaving school and want to put it to good use… ie. Netflix. Laughed my whole way through this review so might have to try this!

Love reading about my star sign and this really spoke to me! ā€œ2019 is going to introduce you to your adult-self while reminding you never to neglect the child within.ā€ OMG!!!!! This is my first year ā€œadultingā€ – and the universe knows it!!

What I want to get out of 2019

ROLLY Mag

I’m going to use Tuesday and Thursday interchangeably as ā€œTickItOffT…ā€ These themes help me focus and direct my blog, but they are not set in stone. Whatever I want to write, I’ll write!!! But I figure when the writers block kicks in (albeit, it kinda already has!) it will help spark some creativity. I hope!

2018 was purely school focused and I didn’t have a chance to focus on/express/improve myself. Since graduating, I have felt such relief to be done with high school- rigid routine, deadlines, rules, restrictions, pressure etc etc. I know these things come with life outside of the high school setting- but it was definitely a pressure cooker situation. So in 2019, I want to focus on myself. To just be.

⁃ I want to read (as per my New Years resolution)

⁃ I want to work and save… but in a job I half enjoy… not just selling fries

⁃ I want to make memories with my friends from high school. Hold on to them and treasure those bonds.

⁃ I want to be a writer

⁃ I want to continue my journey to self love

⁃ I want to implement self improvement strategies

⁃ I want to have structure set by myself… not a school timetable. I will finally be the person who has a weekend routine (haha #goals)

⁃ I want to meal plan and nourish my body. I love food, and food styling… and now I don’t have the confinement of a lunch box, I want to be experimental and creative when it comes to my food!

Similar to my resolutions, these are guidelines not boundaries. This is the person I want to be in 2019. I feel like a shell of myself without the identity I had in school. Even clothes… I will never wear my identifiable uniform again. I have to build a wardrobe for the new me. Because, as the cliche goes; new year, new me. But for real. Or same me, new circumstance.

Whilst all the above begin with ā€œI wantā€… they could be swapped for ā€œI needā€.

Because ā€œI need to be a writerā€ because it is my one true passion and I need to nurture it.

ā€œI need to work and saveā€ because I need experience and money to afford some of my dreams (new car, holidays etc).

Writing this, I feel empowered. I feel excited. And I feel proud of myself. Proud of 2018-me for all she accomplished, and proud of 2019-me for having the courage to commit to change.

Turtles All the Way Down – A Review

ROLLY Mag

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

Welcome to #WordyWednesday! Initially, I thought this would be a “brain dump” kinda blog post theme but today a book review seemed fitting so if I ever post them… they’ll be on a Wednesday šŸ˜… Enjoy!

I took this book away with me when I went on holidays over Christmas. It stayed on my bag the whole time…

Until we got in the car on the way home. Not the books fault haha, but my own personal mental barrier to enjoy reading again.

I thought I would start it that car ride, and after the end of the 3 hour journey, and a few hours at home, I had completed it.

I couldn’t put it down! Not because I had to find out happened, but because it was written so poetically. It was real, honest, confronting and everything in between. One of my favourite things about this text is the ā€œa-haā€ moment when the title is referenced in the book is just so well integrated and poignant.

It was a love story but not cliche.

It was about friendship but no glossed over- real friendship. No questions asked, friendship.

It was about mental health but in a way I’ve never seen. Having been lucky enough to never have had a mental heath illness (note there is a different between MH issues and illnesses) I have struggled to understand some people’s irrational fears.

Just walk away, just stop thinking about, just forget about it, just stop worrying…

Except what Turtles showed me is that someone suffering from a MHI, cannot *just* stop.

And this came to me during the hospital scene involving the hand sanitiser. If you’ve read it, you know.

The alternating inner monologue of Aza’s rational and irrational self was long, and repetitive and spiralled. Yet, by the end of that scene. I could physically taste the hand sanitiser in my own mouth. It was confronting.

But I needed that harsh reality to fully understand what Aza meant about the spiral getting tighter.

I honestly can’t believe this book isn’t more popular. I’ve hardly heard anyone speak of it- except for my bestie (I) who recommended it to me! I hope I’m just living under a rock and that it is, in fact, getting the attention it deserves!

Bonus: I’m not going to lie, I was proud of myself for understanding the references to Keats and Descartes. Thanks education 😜

I’m currently borrowing my copy from the library, although I did see in QBD, I’d prefer the hardcover. Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon- once I track it down šŸ˜…

PS. Another blogging revelation… writing a book review is hard without giving away details! I’m writing this, my approach developed to be ā€œif you know, you know.ā€

Happy reading everyone!

My 2019 Resolutions

ROLLY Mag

@rolly.mag

#1 Listen to podcasts: I used to loved listening to music on my commute to and from school… it was the perfect way to ā€œswitch offā€. But in ā€œPost High School Lifeā€ I want to make my commutes meaningful. And so, enter podcasts! In the past, I’ve loved

• ā€œMillennialā€ by Megan Tran

• ā€œI Don’t Know How She Does Itā€ by Mamamia

• ā€œCtrl Alt Deleteā€ by Emma Gannon

• “Happier” by Gretchen Rubin

But apart from that, I haven’t ventured very far into the world of podcasts. However, the trick now is just knowing where to start! So many of my fave bloggers/websites have podcasts, including

• Let’s Discuss (by Ella Gregory & Monica Beatrice)

• The High Low (Pandora Sykes & Dolly Alderton)

• At Home With… (by Lily Pebbles & Anna Newton- I loved season 1 but am yet to listen to season 2)

• The Perfectionism Project (by Sam Brown)

• Your Dream Life (by Kristina Karlsson)

• The Health Code (Sarah’s Day & Kurt Tilse)

• Keeping it Candid (Sophie Milner & Millie Cotton)

• Exciting Emails (Victoria Meldrew)

Honestly… I could keep going, but I think this list is a pretty decent start!

#2 Stop Shopping As An Activity: I should probably use some more progressive language, like ā€œAvoid reliance on shoppingā€ or something airy fairy, but the simple fact is… I’m a shopaholic! And it needs to stop. I know it will be hard… catching up with friends? Let’s go shopping! Rainy day? Let’s go shopping! Etc etc! I find myself shopping so frequently and unnecessarily. In 2019, I’ll continue to shop however it won’t be weekly/daily… but monthly!!! And when I do shop as an activity (ie. with friends) I’ll set a budget & create a list… AND STICK TO IT! I’ll keep you updated šŸ˜‰

#3 Use My Bullet Journal: I bought this in maybe, October, and have been desperate to use it since! I just like the idea of a tech-free activity… and something tangible. Although I am really quite bad at drawing, I’ll give it a shot- Pinterest inspo will help me out! I don’t have any big plans, just monthly spread, tracking etc

#4 Read for enjoyment: Technically 2018 was spent reading a lot… except I don’t think textbooks should count. Reading (and re reading) my school texts really took the fun out of reading… despite my enjoyment of most of the books (Burial Rites, Foreign Soil etc)- there’s just something really quite draining in your interpretation of the book being criticised & forced into a VCAA approved mould. I banished pleasure reading entirely in 2018, although I may have read in January I can’t remember! I only read in the final days of December- Turtles all the way down- which definitely re sparked my love!

On my list (an edited version):

⁃ How to be a Bawse

⁃ Court of Thorns and Roses

⁃ Winging it

⁃ The universe has your back

⁃ Becoming

#5 Use my essential oils: for my friendship group KK I got a diffuser… which I love! My mum also got a diffuser for Christmas sooooo I really want to make the most of them. I think they are such a beautiful addition to our home & I want to research oils for specific needs. I also have roller ball oils by In Essence that smell delicious but I just don’t use because I don’t want them to run out! It’s silly I know. I think incorporating essential oils into my night time routine might be a good way to make the most of them in a meaningful way.

There we go! My 2019 Resolutions… guidelines not boundaries! I have a few more ā€œshort term goalsā€ but I might record them monthly. All the best with your own celebrations of the New Year- here’s to 2019!

2019 Beauty Wishlist

ROLLY Mag

Happy #MakeupMonday everyone! Today I will be sharing my 2019 makeup wishlist! You can read all about it here on the blog, or follow along on Instagram (@rolly.mag) throughout the day as I post my wishlist for four categories: lips, skin, eyes and palettes!

I actually had to check on my calendar what day it was- NYE! So if you’re looking for a makeup look, some of the sparkle featured throughout this blog post could be right up your street! *think Fenty Beauty lip gloss, Physicians Formula highlight & Sportgirl eyeshadow!* (Can you tell I’m a sucker for some sparkle?!)

We begin with my personal favourite: LIPS! I am a huge lip balm fan- with a slightly ridiculous collection of lip balms… one for every possible situation 😜 The Bite beauty lip balm, for example, would be the perfect addition to my handbag. How sleek is that packaging! Burtsbees is a new found fave of mine this year & I’m hanging to try this lippie. Australis lip chameleon. I am just so intrigued to test this. I know it’s on sale at Priceline right now so I’m hoping to get my hands on it! And finally, Fenty Beauty would be the ultimate luxury lip product for me- and I own nothing like this! Fingers crossed it comes on sale!

… next is skin! This Revlon primer is a favourite of one of my besties so I hope to give it a try on her recommendation! NAPOLEON PERDIS Complex Skin Renewal Hyaluronate Serum because serums make me feel sophisticated and do a lot of my combination skin. Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater looks so dreamy… as does the entire range but I picked just one for the sake of this! Mecca actually sell a three pack of these sprays however I’m having trouble getting my hands on it as it’s sold out almost everywhere near me! And finally, This Works pillow spray… or really anything from this brand! I’m all about everyday pampering & sprays do just the trick!

Next is EYES! Although technically this Olay deep hydrating eye gel could be considered skincare… I love eye creams, they feel like such a pampering skincare step! This Essence mascara is so popular it’s sold out online (Priceline)!!! But I’ve heard such good things about it & at such a cheap price, I’m just itching to get my hands on it! Benefit Gimme brow- simply because it’s a cult favourite and I’m curious to see what all the fuss is about! And finally, I think this Rimmel wonderwing eyeliner would be the perfect foray into the world of eyeliner… a place I’m slightly scared to venture in to!

Finally, we have reached palettes! Models Own aqua proof is appealing to me because of price, packaging and colours- some safe bets and also some experimental colours! Again, this sportsgirl glitterati palette is relatively cheap and so pretty. I’m a sucker for some sparkle. Physicians formula is a brand I’m eager to try in 2019- and I think this all-rounder face palette is the perfect way to test the brand. And finally, Covergirl sunsets. I saw the in Jamie Page’s recent collaboration video with the brand and it is so wearable! Big W seem to be the only place I’ve seen it, yet I still haven’t bought it! Hope you enjoyed this wish list, it’s entirely drug store!!! My favourite!!

• let me know if you’ve tried any of these products & what’s on your wishlist?? •

2018 Reflection

ROLLY Mag

I always do a mini reflection in my head about the year that was, but this year it’s nice to be able to document it on the blog! Initially I had planned to launch the blog on January 1st 2019, but I had a bit of time on December 29th and so on that day ROLLY Mag was born.

Let’s get straight to it!

At the end of 2017, my family took a holiday to Queensland. It was luxury compared to the camping holidays we were used to. Although technically it was not 2018, I feel like that holiday gave us all the rest and recharge we needed to head into the new year. That holiday will always hold a special place in my heart.

January– after a lovely summer holiday, I started year 12 at the end of this month. I couldn’t believe it. I had always looked up to the school leaders and thought how old they looked, how they had everything together. Lolllllll now I can see it was all a facade. No year 12 has their sh!t together. Looking back, I remember some friendship dramas we had that I totally had forgotten about. Amazing what time can do.

February– andddddd we’re off! Straight into year 12 course work was quite the adjustment. I took part in a local youth public speaking contest and lost. One of the many times this year that I felt as though I wasn’t good enough. Hard work not paying off was the theme of my academic life it would seem. That’s dramatic. But at the time it was a stab to my heart. ā€œWhy aren’t I good enough?ā€ Was on replay in my mind. However, highlight of this month was seeing Macklemore in concert! 2018 was my best year for concerts… I was lucky enough to go to sooo many! Despite my shopaholic tendencies, concerts are my favourite way to spend my money. It was at Festival Hall and everyone absolutely sweltering in the heat. Unfortunately that did put a damper on the night but other than that- an incredible show. I also remember Valentine’s Day this year, as my friendship group gave little heart shaped chocolates to each other. Sisters before misters ā¤

March– I went to Ed Sheeran this month- a ā€œhave to see at least onceā€ sorta thing. Also was really researching the ADF Gap Year program this month. I applied and did the testing… crazy got think I could be doing that right now if I had’ve decided to go through with it!

April– Easter, the first of many 18th birthdays & Harry Styles! Despite not knowing too many of his solo songs, he was an absolute rockstar. Such a charisma about him. And of course, I was mostly there for the 1D throwbacks. Probably one of my top 3 favourite concerts.

May– Lots of 18th birthdays this month, Ladies night at a local footy club with friends and little did we know, but our puppy was born this month. May the 4th (be with you!!)

Reallllllly struggled with motivation school wise this first half of the year. It was sudden and scary and I wondered if I’d ever get my schoolmojo back. Spoiler: I never really did.

June– Niall Horan concert. Reallllly didn’t know much of his music but it was chill & he is fun! Slowing ticking off each 1D member’s solo concert to make up for the fact I may never see them perform live as a group (praying they come back!) Sat the GAT. Lotsssssss of birthdays! The one year anniversary of one of my besties (D) and her boyfriend- aka one year of our group of 5 becoming 6 hahah. A tough month for a bestie & navigating the world of being a support to her. And most excitingly… PUPPY MONTH!!!!!! My younger brother and I had been campaigning for a puppy for years, and our little girl came into our lives so quickly & so perfectly. She was definitely meant to be ours. Nearly 8 months of loving her!!

July– such a busy time for me school wise. Went to the footy for the first time in ages with J.

August– Leo’s are out in full force this month! Had my 18th birthday alongside my closest friends which was so special. We celebrated with a lunch in the city. I’ve learnt to have no expectations when it comes to events such as birthdays… this mindset means I always have a fantastic time because I’m not comparing it to my unrealistic expectations!! Sat my hazards test and passed!! Journey to driving is getting closer! Celebrated so many birthdays! School was insanely busy! Andddddd went and saw my boys, 5sos, at Festival Hall! Best album tour yet- they are looking mighty fine and sounding even better. Looooooove them.

September– even more birthdays & school commitments. Themes of the year I think!

October– I had my driving test on the 1st at 8:30am! It was an industry RDO, school holidays & early… so all the road odds were in my favour! I remember being ridiculously nervous. But I passed! Such a relief! Afterwards, my first solo drive was to school for a holiday lesson haha. This month got progressively more crazy… P!ATD concert… no words, it was incredible. Crowd: ā€œcan’t help but to hear and exchanging of wordsā€ Brendon Urie: ā€œI love youā€ MY HEART!!! Then onto Taylor Swift… girl knows how to party!! Dress up day was over too soon but the Teletubbies were a hit with the little kids! Thennnnnnnnn I had my valedictory! Got my hair and makeup done professionally for the first time ever. Was so nice to be pampered. The actual event was a bit tedious but it passed so quickly and it was, on the whole, a lot of fun. Had a sleep over with the girls afterwards where peeling off false eyelashes and chocolate consumption occurred. And to top that month off, on the 31st, was the English exam.

November– the exam period continues. A lot of procrastination & stress occurred. A record low of only 3 breakdowns (if I I remember correctly!) I was finished on the 16th, as were my friends & so we celebrated by going to the local festival & I was forced onto scary show rides! Also got my RSA this month in preparation for life beyond high school. Honestly, this month continued to be busy once school was over so I never really felt like I had a ā€œrestā€ per se.

December– I’m getting tired writing all of this! It truly was an insane year. Kicked off December with birthday celebrations for one of my besties A, then a trip to the beach with J. In between this I had a job interview for a casual stadium job- which I got and begin early Jan! Also had a job interview with my old high school about interning which I will also commence in 2019! Busy busy busy! The icing on top of the school cake was a trip to Lorne with the girl gang. Despite the constant rain we made the most of it- indoor pool swims, food, movie nights, carols, mini golf & the best caramel thickshakes. Also, our schoolies trip kicked off on the day our ATARs were released. I cried. A lot. Not necessarily happy nor sad, just shocked. It was a very finite moment. We have the scores we have been working towards all year. That’s it now. Over. Then I went away with my family. We stayed in a cabin which was fun because puppy slept in my bed every night! Spent Christmas there which was so lovely- again, no expectations and it was wonderful. More Christmas carols, the best ice cream & puppy swam for the first time on Xmas eve- Fun times. Some extended family incidents occurred which were challenging. But deep breathes & perspective helps. Finally read for pleasure- turtles all the way down. Finally felt the long awaited relief of school being over- it hit me out of the blue but gosh it was a welcome feeling. So happy to close that chapter of my life. Particularly because of how shitty the atar made me feel. I know i shouldn’t use that to measure my success, yet that is its ultimate purpose. And it’s bullshit. But this is a reflection. Not an attack on VCAA. That’s to come šŸ˜‰

There we have it! 2018 in a blog post! Although rather vague in places, this was my year. Insane & challenging are the words that spring to mind. But it was also the best yet. Here’s to 2019!

2018 Beauty Faves

ROLLY Mag

Woo! My first ‘official’ blog post! I mean, I don’t even know the URL of this blog at the moment… but nonetheless I am powering through! I hope to post beauty related content on a Monday (#MakeupMondays), however to get the ball rolling… I thought this was a good place to start. Luckily, I haven’t made my bullet journal yet, I only have a rough blog schedule, so my imaginary organised self is taking a deep breathe and rolling with this.

Now, let’s get to the juicy part… the beauty! As you can see from the image above:

  1. Lighting for photos is hard (so is layout, editing, spacing etc etc)
  2. I much prefer skin care to make up

Let’s start from the top left and work our way across- however this is not in order of favourites.

Glow Lab Night Cream: Ā IĀ first tried this product last Christmas when I got the mini set for Christmas! I really enjoyed it and so re purchased the full size of this product. It doesn’t smell amazing, but it is a nice enough scent. However, at $18.99 full price, I would consider this expensive. Don’t worry though, I got it in the sale šŸ˜‰ (From Priceline btw, but Woolies also sell it!)

Innisfree Skinny Brow Mascara: This is a relatively new purchase. One of my besties (J) got me some face masks from Innisfree in early December and so I made my way to the Melb Central store to check it out for myself… well, it’s beautiful. And, I imagine, very ‘Glossier’. Easy to use- check. Relatively cheap- check, about $10 full price.

Maybelline Baby Lips Candy Wow inĀ MixedĀ Berry:Ā TheĀ nightĀ ofĀ theĀ 5SOSĀ concertĀ oneĀ ofĀ myĀ bestiesĀ (I)Ā wasĀ usingĀ thisĀ andĀ IĀ wasĀ amazed!Ā AĀ tintedĀ lipĀ balm!Ā Revolutionary.Ā IĀ haveĀ sinceĀ broadenedĀ myĀ horizons,Ā asĀ youĀ willĀ see,Ā butĀ IĀ looooveĀ thisĀ andĀ amĀ keenĀ toĀ tryĀ theĀ otherĀ colours.Ā IĀ gotĀ mineĀ onĀ saleĀ fromĀ BigĀ WĀ forĀ aboutĀ $4.

W7 Absolute Lashes from Chemist Warehouse: Insanely cheap, your lashes but better kinda vibe and a total packaging rip off of Benefit.

Glow Lab Facial Serum: I got this mini (5ml) from the same mini set I got the night cream in. Only recently started using it and I am so surprised how long this teeny tiny bottle has lasted. however, I recently picked up the 30ml in the Priceline sale for $18- cringe at the price but worth it.

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Lip Balm: weird shape but o m g this lip balm was my best friend during high school. It lived in my pocket and I showed her off to every one. Looking for a lip balm? BUY THIS!!!! $3.70 full price at Priceline, but often on sale. iHerb have this same product but in a round tube- applicator which looks much easier to apply.

Burts Bees Naturally Tinted Balm in Red Dahlia: this is what I mean about broadening my tinted-lip-balm-horizons. I got this free with the last ever edition of Aussie Cosmo (sadness) and was super excited because I basically saved $13. I was scared of the colour at first, but upon application it is perfect- not too dark. Again, your lips but better vibe.

Le tan Self Tanning Foam: Another bestie (E) got me onto this just before our valedictory. Not too smelly, sticky, fake etc but I don’t really have anything else to compare it to. I think it’s being discontinued but a few chemist warehouse stores have it for $13 so Imma be stocking up.

Palmers Coconut Oil Hydrating Mask: bought on a whim from Big W on sale- smells good, feels good, will re purchase.

Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel: this is a mini I got in a pack from Chemist Warehouse. I used it a few years back upon recommendation from my dermatologist and really enjoyed it. And the packaging and $24 price tag (full size) make it seem sophisticated lol. I got the minis again because I needed to make my schoolies makeup bag looks put together and encourage me to maintain self care whilst on holidayszzzz. I will eventually buy the full size when a) I use this one up and b) it’s on sale (obvs).

Sukin Natural Deodorant: I use a regular Rexona roll on and then spray this over the top for the smell mostly. I don’t really take much notice of how well it works, but it’s cheap and natural and nice so I use it.

Huzzah- we have come to the end. I am feeling foolish because this took me so long to write and I’m shocked at how much effort blogging is taking but LOL it’s all bloggers ever say and so why am I surprised???

Hope you enjoyed having a little nosey into my 2018 faves. It took some thinking to do this round up honestly, because I rotate through my products frequently and don’t really have a firm fave.

Posts coming to ROLLY Mag soon include:

  • 2018 reflection
  • letter to my future self
  • 2019 beauty wish list
  • AND MORE!!!

Welcome to ROLLY Mag

ROLLY Mag

Thanks for joining me!

I’m about 24 minutes into this whole blogging thing, and it’s already harder than I thought.

Let me introduce myself.

I’m Rolly. Kinda. It’s was my childhood nickname- and it’s stuck.

I’m now 18 years old. Fresh out of high school, facing a whole new chapter of my life.

I grew up reading Dolly magazine, and then CLEO and Cosmo. Back when Sara McClean was beauty editor at Dolly- I decided that writing was what I wanted to do. But within my lifetime, magazines have almost died out. And it makes me so sad to think that girls of today won’t have Dolly to turn to. But this blog- I hope- will be a magazine of sorts, for myself. A collection of thoughts, ideas, things I’m loving, brain rambles etc, etc. Hence, the name is a combination of my self hood and my passion – this blog is a cumulation of who I am, was and who I want to be.

ROLLY Mag has been in the works- ie. in my mind- for at least 5 years. And sitting here to write this feels kinda surreal. I am finally doing it. I know 13 year old me would be so proud. Although, ha ha ha, it’s already been a struggle. Creating an email, Instagram handle and setting up this blog has taken more time than I imagined. But I’m doing this for me. Past, present and future me. I created the logo myself- woo. For some reason, I have always imagined ‘ROLLY’ in capitals and ‘Mag’ to be cursive. It’s not perfect but it’s a start.

I’m excited for what lies ahead for ROLLY Mag…

Love,

ROLLY xx
