Week Latte #4

ROLLY Mag

Another week, done and dusted!

Last week I shared my highs and lows of the week, which I enjoyed the format of… however this week I wanted to try something new. @gparrish has created a hashtag on IG #ProjectYouAndMe where mothers share updates on themselves and their children- things they’ve been loving lately, new things they’ve learnt etc. I wanted to do this… but with my puppy (LOL, I know- but being a puppy mum is my favourite job in the world). So here we go…

YOU: Scratch at out legs when we sit at the dining table, hoping for some food. Lay down in the sun on the hot, fake grass instead of in the shade. Eat celery and beans as a crunchy snack. Can swim the whole length of the pool, and know where the steps are, but you still won’t hop in yourself. Cuddle up to sleep in my bed, but always on my side (ie. where I’d like to lay down haha).

ME: Anticipating big life changes. Waiting for my questions to be answered by the uni. Using uni as an excuse for everything. Want to make banana bread but Melbourne days are too hot to put on the oven. Say “you are just the cutest” to you at least 1000 times a day. Practising being grateful and present- I’ve waited for these days and now I’m here.

And now, the links I loved this week!

So many good reads linked here! Thanks @agirlandgrey šŸ˜ https://www.agirlandgrey.com/lifestyle/the-sunday-edition-11/

Saving this mostly for myself so I remember how much I love this home!https://estliving.com/woollahra-home-decus-interiors/amp/

Steph often shares this recipe on her stories but this week she put it on her blog! So happy because now I can save it for uni meal prep inspo! https://justanothermummyblog.com/garlic-coconut-chicken-with-cauliflower-rice/

This IG account looks so delicious, but is also full of practical advice! Saving it for my uni days šŸ˜… https://instagram.com/collegenutritionist?utm_source=ig_profile_share&igshid=rmy3aozh14y5

Need some bad advice? Or just a giggle? https://www.hit.com.au/story/ask-tanya-your-ultimate-guide-to-new-years-resolutions-and-surviving-january-120504

It’s a complicated online world, and this is such an interesting read- particularly in the wake of Fyre Festival (scroll down for more on that!) But transparency is key. I don’t care if it’s an ad, I just want to know. I trust the people I follow enough- that if they post an ad I’ll still believe their review. I understand a girl gotta pay those bills. But if it’s not disclosed… essentially it’s illegal and a lie. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/technology-46960179#click=https://t.co/5Y5hVCsZ98

In a similar vain to above, I was so grateful to see Natalie Barbu explicitly tell her audience that she contacted a brand in order to work with them. I was honestly shocked that she revealed this- because I have NEVER heard another influencer say this. And honestly, why not? If it aligns with your brand, why not hustle? Transparency is so valuable to consumers of content; particularly no that I have this blog, I’m interested in the BTS.

Staying on Youtube, Sophie’s blog of her smear test was such an informative video. I have seen so much encouragement online about smear tests, and it is great to see we are promoting the importance of them, over the scary-ness. And brave of Sophie to share so much.

More food inspo, Hannah recently shared this on her stories & it has me drooling! http://hannahgale.co.uk/2017/01/18/how-to-make-my-fave-healthy-thai-broth/

Chloe Plumstead shared this link on her stories (I love her “weekly faves” style posts she does via IG) & it’s a great thought piece. https://www.manrepeller.com/2019/01/best-advice-ever-received.html

My favourite, favourite, favourite (!!!) Hallie is back on the blog being real, honest and wise as usual! https://amongotherthings.com/2019/01/why-i-quit-blogging-social-media-30-days-digital-detox-burnout.html

And finally, if you’re interested….

Guys, I watched the documentary ā€œFyreā€ about Fyre Festival on Netflix this week and found it so intriguing! So I’ve linked some articles that I found particularly interesting in relation to the doco.

At the end I was left wondering ā€œhow did Ja Rule get away with it?ā€ Personally, I’m not buying his ā€œI was played tooā€ cover up. https://m.eonline.com/news/1006856/ja-rule-defends-himself-amid-fyre-festival-documentaries-i-too-was-hustled-scammed-bamboozled

I found Marc Weinstein such a well articulated speaker during the doco, and reading his blog posts I can see now that his way with words takes form in both his speech and writing. Mesmerising! https://medium.com/@warcmeinstein

If you’ve watched the Hulu version, I’m dying to know- what is it like?! Comment below!

Happy weekend friends xx

Summer bucket list

ROLLY Mag

Here in Australia, we are experiencing summer- which is definitely my favourite season! For one, there is always so much on to see and do. However, as summer comes to an end in just over a month and my ā€œholidaysā€ will likely be rudely interrupted by work commitments (šŸ˜…) I thought it would be fun to share my summer bucket list with you all!

Any other recommendations for Melbourne in the summertime- please comment below!

@melbournegirl is my fave for Melbourne to-dos year round, so if you need more inspiration check out Emily’s blog & IG!

Do:

1. Nelson Mandela Exhibition at the Museum

2. Vic Market Night Market

3. Pixar Putt Mini Golf at Fed Square

4. Outdoor cinema

5. Visit Muji & IKEA (for makeup storage- not particularly summery, but a fun outing nonetheless šŸ˜…)

Eat:

1. Arbory Afloat

2. Pony Fish

3. King & Godfree

This will probably be something I add to as the year goes on, but these are some starting points.

Thanks for reading!

Revlon K-Beauty Review

ROLLY Mag

Welcome back to #MakeupMonday! Today, a review of two new-in Revlon products- both purchased in a recent Priceline sale.

Revlon Photoready Instant Cheek Maker Blush and Highlight Duo:

The colour on this product is insane! Absolutely love it! I like using highlight as eyeshadow too and this creamy product is perfect… except application will be a little tricky. As it is on my actual check. Perhaps it’s just my face shape, but I find this tricky to get the angle right and get both the blush and highlight in the right place in one swipe. I sort of have to angle it and do one at a time. Also, I don’t often use blush- and when I do it’s very subtle… so this heavier colour is a bit different for me. However, I love this colour and it will just take some getting used to. I would love to know the best way for blending cream products- fingers? Brush? Sponge? It will take some practise. However, don’t let that deter you because the colour is beautiful!

Revlon Kiss Cushion Lip Tint:

I don’t know if it’s because I’m used to such a wide colour range in other lip products but I thought this range was a bit limited! I would have preferred something pink-ier than this but there wasn’t much in between this and bright pink! The cushion applicator is a bit tricky on my thin lips however once it’s on- it’s on! Long lasting, luckily, because I find it hard enough to apply. However I do like the colour, and it’s a fun product because it’s so different to anything I’ve used before.

In summary: I *like* both products but don’t think I’ll repurchase! I love Revlon, and I think their foray into ā€œK Beautyā€ has been brave- and successful! However, these particular products just aren’t for me. If you have a few more skills/experience in the makeup department- you could do great things with this! However, ease of application is what makes me hesitant to recommend these products (despite their best intentions.) This said, I will keep trying to use these products (#ProjectPan) and I’m hoping I’ll learn to love them. I’ll keep you updated, of course šŸ˜‰

Have you tried these products? Thoughts?

Bedside Table Beauty

ROLLY Mag

A little look at a tidier, more refined version of my bedside table….

Up the back are some Meredith Gaston quote cards which my mum gave to me years ago! They are so beautifully illustrated and have some sweet quotes that I rotate through.

My lamp is also old Kmart if you were wondering!

And also an empty Taylor Swift perfume bottle which I use as decoration now!

My Kikki K eye mask that I love using to block out all the light and sleep in pitch black! However I could sleep right into the afternoon if I wear this so I tend to save it for weekends when I don’t have an alarm (at least, when I was in school I did this!)

The Weleda Skin Food smells so amazing and feels thick and moisturising however I use it as a hand cream at night and really don’t find it to be very good for that use! My hands don’t feel moistured at all! But it smells so nice which is why I continue to use it. Maybe it’s not intended to be used like this or I have really dry hands??

Glow Lab night cream which I love to slather on after I’ve washed my face at night. It often follows my application of Bio Oil.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Cream is a newbie to my nighttime skincare and I really enjoy using it. The roller ball is really cooling and I have honestly noticed a difference in the appearance of my under eyes!

This Kikki K Be Brave journal I got as a Christmas gift a few years ago and I love having a flick through it every now and again for an uplifting quote. It’s so pretty too!

This is not my entire nighttime skin care routine, nor is it my entire bedside table! I also have a salt lamp, alarm clock, pictures and usually a water bottle accompanying these items! But I cleared some space to make this blog post haha.

Mini beauty sales haul

ROLLY Mag

Another Saturday, another sales haul! Although, unlike in previous weeks, this one is current! I bought all this stuff this week.

Priceline

Thankyou Botanical French Vanilla & coconut body lotion:

You guys, this smells INCREDIBLE!

Normally I stick to my trust St Ives Shea Butter for body moisturiser but Thankyou is one of my favourite brands- I love buying something good for me, and for a good cause. And I’m already a huge fan of their hand sanitiser and body wash, so when I saw this new scent, I new I had to try. And my oh my, it does not disappoint. Leaves my skin feeling nourished, and it temporarily transports me to a tropical island where coconuts are in abundance. In love šŸ˜ I bought mine from Priceline but I’ve seen it in Big W, and it’s online too.

Covergirl Lip Topcoat

I am a sucker for scams. I’m sure any clear lip balm would make the perfect primer to topcoat for lipstick, however it was on sale at Priceline (finally tracked it down!!) and I really like the applicator. It feels nice too. So maybe it’s not a scam, but definitely not a necessity.

Sukin Rosehip Oil

Also in the Priceline sale! I could have bought the 25ml, but went for the 50ml because it was better value for money. However, it’s so much it may last me a lifetime šŸ˜… But I’m excited to start using it, as I hear rosehip is a great ā€œall rounderā€ oil for your skin.

David Jones

EstƩe Lauder Advanced Night Repair Mini

Awwww you guys how cute is this 7ml mini!! @sarah.and.co_ on IG shared a link to get a free sample of this product, so of course I signed up! At first I went to MYER, and that particular store had run out of samples. However, DJs had my back! It’s so small and cute… the perfect way to test a luxury product. Now to, you know, actually USE IT instead of doing what I’m notorious for… just holding on to it for use ā€œone dayā€ šŸ™„

Miniso

They had 2 for $5.99 on selected beauty products, so I took advantage of this! I’ve always wanted to try some of their products, simply because the packaging is so lovely! I got the toner and a makeup remover to test out.

Week Latte #3

ROLLY Mag

ā€œWeek Latteā€- all the best from the internet this week, no froth.

L-R: @gotoskincare @abeautifulplate @gyanyankovich @itsvilda

Happy Friday everyone! This week has felt particularly long šŸ˜… I honestly don’t know how some people do it! I’m on holidays and only work casually, yet life still manages to get on top of me. How do some girls have a 9-5, blog and a life!?

Seeing as this week was so eventful, I wanted to share highs and lows. There were a LOT of highs… I feel like ever since I graduated, life has been changing at a million miles an hour and new experiences are constantly being presented- it’s intense but I’m grateful. And lows, whilst there definitely were some, aren’t really that important in the grand scheme of things, now as I look back. So only a couple to share.

Highs:

I got a new job! I’m so excited to start this job because it’s actually something I’m half interested in, not just *another* retail-for-the-sake-of -it. I’ll share more when I can!

On Wednesday, first round university offers were announced and I was accepted into a Communications degree! I’m really happy and relieved, although I’m not sure if it’s what I *really* want. However, I don’t know what else I would want. See my dilemma?

Saw three of my best friends this week and it’s just so nice to have catchups and be together… which is getting harder now that we are all getting busier and don’t see each other at school.

I also quit one of my jobs! It was soul destroying, even working casually. I’m so happy to be rid of it. Customer service is not for the faint hearted and I’ve really had my confidence bruised working on a window serving fast food. Hint hint. Thanks for the memories, even if they weren’t so great. šŸŽ¶

Lows:

Technical difficulties. That’s all I’m going to say haha.

Enrolling in my university course is not a straightforward task. It’s been very time consuming. And confusing.

Onto the Internet goodness:

Always looking to luxe up my nighttime routine!

I absolutely loved this honest review by Camille (@onabeautybender). Sometimes it’s hard to know where to spend your money, particularly on luxury items… because everyone seems to love everything and you never hear a ā€œbadā€ review. Except nothing is ever ā€œbadā€, it just doesn’t simply work for that particular person. I was pleasantly surprised to read this post.

https://onabeautybender.com/2019/01/15/5-cult-products-that-did-not-work-for-me/

I love this ā€œAsk Pollyā€ column that gets delivered to my inbox every so often. And this weeks title was particularly apt…

https://www.thecut.com/2019/01/ask-polly-how-do-i-decide-what-to-do-with-my-life.html

I am sooooo eager to get my hands on this new ā€œtinyā€ gift pack from @gotoskincare – not only is it super cute, it’s also practical! Because I have so many other beauty products, it’s nice to get minis as a sort of ā€œtry before you buy/invest/commitā€.

https://www.gotoskincare.com/products/body/tiny-stuff

Beauty hacks by Allana… I thought the dryer sheets in shoes hack was particularly life changing! I am fascinated by these sorts of videos.

https://youtu.be/vwdCtzKjTAQ

Such a beautifully heartfelt piece from Tyla! I could relate šŸ˜…

https://www.hellotyla.com/single-post/2019/01/17/3-Things-I-would-say-to-the-Girl-I-was-a-Year-Ago

I absolutely adore Chloe and her writing style. Her blog is just so thoughtful in its presentation. I aspire to write like her one day. I would love to create more considered and poetic pieces like this. One of my all time faves from Chloe. Take a read!

L-R: @emmagannonuk @meghandono @vixmeldrew via @unsplash @adorebeautyofficial

Thank you for reading, as always! Another week full of blog posts here on ROLLY Mag. My life is definitely starting to get a bit busier, but having the ability to blog from my phone makes me committed to my passion- it’s too accessible for excuses! At least, that’s what I’m saying now šŸ˜… Let’s wait until uni & my three part time jobs start… then I’ll reassess daily blogging!

Have a wonderful weekend! Let me know your plans in the comments.

Thrift shop book haul

ROLLY Mag

Short and sweet today, friends!

I don’t often got to charity stores, but when I do, I head straight to the book section!

Once you filter through all the copies of Twilight (šŸ˜…), you can find some gems!

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

I really want to read this and then see the movie!

The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood

This is a pretty yet deceiving cover because the blurb makes me thing the book is a bit creepy and mystical. Excited to venture out of my comfort zone with this one.

Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham

Always up for a #girlpower read… although a lot has change in Lena’s life since she wrote this book. I don’t really ā€œfollowā€ her, but I remember hearing good things when this was first released.

As you can see, my TBR Pile just got bigger šŸ˜… I’ll keep you updated!

Ps. Thrifting is something I’d like to do more this year… all about saving $$ whilst being sustainable, ya know. I just need to find some of the best shops in Melbourne because the ones near me are tired.

Where It All Began

ROLLY Mag

I precisely remember the moment I bought my first Cosmopolitan magazine.

I was in the car, and on the radio Cosmo was being advertised- this particular story was about moving and living in another country. It was a cover story, and I was young and dreaming of New York so I begged my parents to buy it for me, a scantily clad Miranda Kerr on the cover. That day forward, Cosmo was a monthly addition to my life.

But before Cosmo, was Dolly.

I had to feed a neighbours cat whilst they were away on holiday for a few weeks, and as payment, she bought me a Dolly magazine. I read it cover to cover, pulling out posters and pages that inspired me, and built a condensed version of the magazine in a plastic folder.

Around this time, I also read Zoe Foster Blake’s ā€œAir Kissesā€. I was maybe 11 or 12 years old, and after reading the book- I pushed aside my ambitions to be an Olympic swimmer (I hadn’t been doing lessons for at least 2 years at this point šŸ˜…) and declared I wanted to be a beauty editor at a magazine. I told my then-best friend and she said to me, ā€œyou could be better than that. Be the big editor.ā€

She planted the seed in my head… And so, our class magazine was born. It went under two names- from memory- ā€œSeriously Sassyā€ and ā€œSecret Sistersā€. I was the editor, agony aunt, beauty editor and more- getting classmates to do other columns. I remember chasing people to submit their articles, cover shoots in the playground, and publishing in black and white because we couldn’t make 20 copies of a 20 paged zine in colour, of course. Our class teacher was so supportive, and allowed time on Friday afternoons for us to spend creating the magazine.

I remember once, after we had done a dedicated page to One Direction, my teacher called me into her office and gave me posters from a weekend paper of 1D. I was so excited!

This whole ā€œmagazine epiphanyā€ all occurred in a short period of time. So whilst I was busily creating my Grade 5/6 magazine, I was reading Dolly.

My favourite section was beauty, by Sara McLean. Then one fateful day, she announced she was leaving Dolly. My heart broke. I couldn’t imagine what would happen to my beloved beauty section once she was gone. So I sent her a hurried email telling her how much I love her work and how I’d miss her. I *wish* I could find that email. She emailed me back quickly, assuring me that Gyan Yankovich was filling her role and to trust her, we were in good hands. So I waited to read Gyan’s first piece- where she wrote her name phonetically so we would know how to pronounce it- and I remember thinking ā€œyep, I like her.ā€

Fast forward to high school, where I began reading Cosmo and Cleo. I recognised a lot of names and faces from my Dolly days and I began to understand the ruthless nature of magazines- or the behind the scenes of them.

I had taken to reading Cleo more regularly than Cosmo because I had received a subscription for Christmas. But I was also discovering the world of the internet. I loved (and love) The Design Files and The Grace Tales… they were like digital magazines and Lucy Feagins and Georgie Abay filled the Sara McLean hole in my heart. If you’re wondering, The Grace Tales is a parenting site- but I loved seeing business women, fashion and recipes merge on there.

One day when scrolling, I saw that Bronwyn Mccahon had a feature on TGT. And she’d had her third baby! It shocked me that I had missed this major news, so ran out to buy Cosmo immediately.

Then my months consisted of a rotation of Cleo, Dolly and Cosmo. To be transparent- I never read Girlfriend- except for when they had poster books attached- because, 1D gal at heart. šŸ˜‰

When Cleo and Dolly shut down, I cried. I don’t have the last issue of Dolly nor Cleo, because I could never find them in store. It would seem other girls wanted to hold on to those teenage memories too. By the time Cosmo announced its closure, I had no more tears. I’d endured this disappointment before. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. I picked up the last issue and read it mournfully. But I will always treasure that issue because it introduced me to my favourite Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm (in the shade Red Dahlia) šŸ˜‰ What helped with the sadness, was the outpouring of love on social media. The current and ex team members with their heart felt posts, reminiscing and thanking the magazine for all it gave them. The womanhood behind magazines is what lives on, now that the doors have closed.

Nowadays, I can find my favourites from my magazine days on Mamamia, Buzzfeed and more. It always makes me feel proud when I see their name in the byline and see their career progression. These women were, are, and always will be my ultimate inspirations. I feel sad for girls that don’t have a magazine to turn to. But I trust that they have these amazing women – and their wealth of knowledgeable- accessible on the internet. That’s why I have this blog. To contribute to that space that girls turn to now.

And by the way, my dream is still to be a beauty editor at a magazine.

Below, in no particular order, are the women who I remember to have written my favourite magazines. I will always be thankful to have read your words.

ā€œGet to know meā€ quiz

ROLLY Mag

Hey everyone! Last Tuesday, I shared my 10 Facts About Me blog post in an effort to help me familiarise myself with you all.

This week, I’m doing a similar thing by sharing the templates that @emshelx created on Instagram.

I think they’re heaps of fun for getting to know someone, so I thought I’d share them here in case you don’t have me on Instagram!

(I did have to re-do some of my answers as I didn’t save them from IG, but it’s essential the same!)

I also made my own! It’s not anything fancy, but still some interesting things to choose. I actually found it really hard because I love books and movies separately and would choose differently depending on circumstance… and I’m definitely only a morning person if I’ve had a solid 9 hours sleep šŸ˜… But that’s all the fun of it!

Just DM me or visit @emshelx if you would like these templates to do your own! They are so much fun and a great, easy and fun way to get to know each other. If you do fill them out, please tag me so I can read them too ā˜ŗļø

I would also like to reiterate that the original templates credited ā€œ@emshelxā€ belong to @emshelx and the answers are my own. The templates credited ā€œ@rolly.magā€ belong to me.
