2019 Makeup Faves

ROLLY Mag

2019 Makeup Favourites ❤️ Following on from skincare favourites yesterday, l want to talk about my fave makeup discoveries of 2019. Blush, as a concept 😅, was new to me in 2019, but I soon became quite the fan. I’ve tried a few, but the Flower Beauty blush in the shade “sweet pea” is so perfect and pretty. It’s a buildable colour that looks very natural of my fair complexion. The brushes from Flower are also new to me, but for under $10 each they are such incredible quality. This is the powder brush featured but I do love the buffing foundation brush best 👌 In news surprising to no one, my fave highlight is the LLIVIA Beaute single highlight in the shade “chai” – the glow is real with this one 🤩 I also tried the IT Cosmetics CC cream which is honestly as good as everyone says. But for a savey option, you cannot go past this Chi Chi CC cream. I would say it leans more to a light/medium coverage foundation than a CC cream. It’s so delightful, that I picked up a backup in the Myer Boxing Day Sales 🙊 Full Brow was a new brand to me, and I really love all products I’ve tried from them- the brow pencil, clear brow gel and tinted brow fibre (featured above.) The fibre is not clumpy, it’s easy to work with and the brand is Melbourne based which I love. And finally, as a long time Lanolips lover I was soooo excited to try the limited edition tint in the shade “Nectar”. It’s honestly my fave shade of them all. It’s the perfect subtle pop of colour plus it has SPF. I’m currently tempted by their limited edition Xmas spice colour too. Should I do it?! 🤔🙊💋 Overall, 2019 was such a fab year beauty wise for me. I made so many new discoveries and learnt SO MUCH about makeup and skincare. And it’s all thanks to you guys! Love ya xxx

2019 Skincare Faves

ROLLY Mag

2019 Skincare Favourites ❤️ It’s hard to choose my faves, but honestly these products are standouts 🌟 I love Cipher for many reasons, but basically, they’re Aussie and this Night Shift serum is so effective👌 When I mentioned how amazing the Tribe Anti Redness Serum in early 2019, so many of you took my recommendation and bought it for yourself which makes me so happy 🤗 This stuff seriously does wonders for facial redness. Medik8 and @Beaute Pacifique are both higher end brands that I honestly wouldn’t have tried if they weren’t gifted to me. However, this night cream is my absolute holy grail, and as I come to the end of it, I will definitely be making a purchase of my own. I could use this product by itself and my skin would be happy. The peptides have also been an ingredient I didn’t know my skin needed and have done wonders for the overall appearance of my skin. The Inkey List cleanser made me rethink cleansers, because admittedly, I never paid much attention to them before. But! It is so gentle yet effective, and this bottle has lasted me MONTHS! Bang for buck right there. Now, the Queen Screen (kindly gifted by @morgansskinjournal 💖👯‍♀️) and Priming Moisturiser aren’t necessarily faves of 2029 because I only had them for such a short amount of time… but they’re definitely on their way to being faves of 2020 😏 I’ve been using them everyday because they are *that* good, so they get honourable mentions here 💁‍♀️ I have combo skin, for reference, and I find the sunscreen isn’t too glowy but just right, and the primer is a good balance too- particularly on my dry cheeks.

2019 Favourite Brands

ROLLY Mag

My favourite brand discoveries of 2019 🌟 Instagram definitely fuelled my shopping addiction, however I’m grateful because without it, I never would have discovered these incredible brands. 😍 @tlc.body hair fragrance is something you wouldn’t think you need, but trust me you do 💁‍♀️ @maarkslip have created universally flattering lipstick shades that are able to be personalised 💋 @aceologybeauty lip mask is my holy grail lip product 🙏 @kashzalehandmadecosmeticbag rose gold cosmetic bag is literally the cutest addition to any makeup collection! @innisfreeaustralia continued to be one of my favourite brands 🌸 @meccamax released the most Instagrammable palette of the year- and it’s beautiful 🤩and the primer that broke the Internet @elfcosmeticsau truly is *that* good 😉

December Favourites

ROLLY Mag

How many favourites posts are too many? I was contemplating skipping a December faves because I do have a 2019 All-Inclusive Faves post coming up, but then I thought no, I want to do this! So here we are. I have a few products that I believe are worth mentioning, hope you enjoy!

The Unnamed Skincare Masks / here

I was kindly gifted these masks, and I’ve since seen them all over IG. I mean, they’re sooooo Instagrammable so I really don’t mind seeing them in my feed. A few things I love about the brand:

  • they’re Aussie
  • they do free standard shipping on all Aus orders
  • Prices start at $13- for a luxe brand, that’s pretty affordable

I tried out the hydrating mask and the brightening mask .

I enjoyed both of them, I didn’t have any issues with the fragrance nor did my skin react.

However, my favourite of the two would be the hydrating mask. This is because after I used it, my skin really did feel more hydrated. (I have combo skin, FYI).

Whereas the brightening mask, whilst it was lovely to use, I didn’t notice my skin looked all that much brighter afterwards. It does have lovely ingredients like peptides and niacinamide so perhaps consistent use of this mask would show the brightening effects.

Overall, I really enjoyed these masks and I think their luxe aesthetic makes them such a fab gift for your beauty lover friend (or yourself!) This bundle in particular is on my wishlist. (Gifted)

Azclear Soothing Gel / here

I began using this soothing gel under my primer of a morning and it does exactly what it says. It is cooling and I noticed it reduced the appearance of my redness. It does leave a slightly sticky feeling on the skin, but it didn’t interfere with any of the products I layered over the top. It is really easy to integrate into my routine. And, I learnt that this is an airless pump that means there is less product wastage- win! (Gifted)

Innisfree Matte Mineral Setting powder / here

I’ve linked the closest product I could find, I believe the powder is the same, I just have a cute packaged one that @beautybyhiuy gave me ❤

This powder is magic- it mattifies on the skin so well. At first I thought it was TOO mattifying but it wore really well throughout the day, I looked dewy not sweaty mess.

Like any powder product, especially small ones, it’s a bit messy to apply, but worth it!

Trilogy Vitamin C / here

The actual product I have pictured is only 1ml, I got this as a GWP ages ago. I have been using this in my nighttime routine pretty frequently and i have noticed quite a difference in the brightness of my skin. I am finally realising what a powerhouse ingredient Vitamin C is! I have the Cipher shield to use next, but would definitely recommend the Trilogy one for it’s price-point (when on sale of course!)

The Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream / here

I’ve spoken about this before, but I have been using it religiously everyday for the past month and so wanted to give a little update on my thoughts.

I have noticed my under eye area is so much more smooth and moisturised when I use this product. I have really been enjoying it.

I don’t think it is very ‘heavy duty’ and if you goal is to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, this probably isn’t the eye cream for you. however, as an everyday extra pop of moisture to the eye area, it is perfect. I even use it a ‘primer’ specifically just for my under eye area. (Gifted)

January Editor’s Letter

ROLLY Mag

Happy 2020!

2019 was a LOT.

The fact that my Instagram account was deleted by Instagram on the eve of my one year blogging anniversary has really put a dampener on the year.

I’m still upset about it, and don’t see myself getting over it anytime soon. I wrote a panicky blog post here if you want to read more about what had happened…. sadly I have nothing to update you on, I’ve heard nothing from IG and my account is still extinct.

However, onwards and upwards!

I am happy to announce that you can now follow my new ROLLY Mag account here – @ rolly_mag

I also encourage you to follow my back up account @rollymagblog and if you’re a creator, create a back up account for yourself too! I do not trust Instagram as a platform anymore, and so I am always going to be working to keep my content safe.

Because my account was deleted, I took an impromptu digital detox.

To be honest, I never really felt ready to return to Instagram. It made me too sad. But I missed all my blogging babes too much. And I won’t lie, I had a lot of new in items I wanted to share ha.

Although I was so sad about my account during my time off the gram, I reallllllly enjoyed it.

The first few days, I was instinctively tapping on my phone screen where my IG app used to be (I deleted the app entirely). It scared me how much of a habit that was. Every morning, I’d roll over, pick up and my phone and go for a scroll. Except, I obviously couldn’t.

It has definitely given me a wake up call in regards to my relationship with the app.

I plan on being very strict with when and how I use it in the future.

My screen time was something ridiculous like five hours a day in the past. That’s just embarrassing.

So, I’m sure everyone else has a similar 2019 goal, but one of mine is LESS SCREEN TIME!!! And not looking at my phone first thing in the morning, or last thing at night.

Thank you to every one for all of your incredible support of ROLLY Mag this past year.

You guys- my readers and followers- make this all worth it. And the connections I’ve made are the reason I do this in the first place!

I’m excited for the year ahead:

* I plan on saving money for my US trip in 2021.

* Shopping my own beauty stash more frequently.

* Starting uni…

* And turning 20! (In eight months… is it too ealry to start celebrating?)

What are you looking forward to in 2020?

Important! Please read!

ROLLY Mag

This is a panic post to let you all know my Instagram account @rolly.mag has been disabled and deleted by Instagram. I am no longer able to log in to my account nor will the account show if you search for it!

I am extremely distressed and am currently jumping through hoops trying to reaccess the account. Instagram does not make this an easy process.

I was given this notification that I had breached guidelines. I have no idea what this could mean as I have never acted in a way harmful or spammy to the community.

If you have noticed suspicious action on my account today, that may make you believe I have been hacked, please let me know immediately by contacting hellorollymag@gmail.com

Similarly, if you have been through this before, please share your experience… how long does it take to resolve?

I am soooooo upset particularly because this comes on the eve of my one year anniversary of ROLLY Mag.

I’ll keep you all updated.

Week Latte #27

ROLLY Mag, Week Latte

Happy last Week Latte of 2019!

O M G.

We did it!

And I can’t quite believe it 😱

I hope you enjoyed all of the content I shared throughout the month- I will eventually get around to curating it in one blog post!

This time between Christmas and New Year makes me forget what day it is hah!

Last weekend, I had a girls day with some friends. We went to Grain Store for brekkie and saw Chicago at the Melbourne Arts Centre. It was such a fun yet chill day out and kinda reminded me that I should actually get out and do things more often- lol. On my days off I like to do nothing. But having that city day made me realise I should adventure a bit more too. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ll still be doing plenty of nothing 😂

These photos are mesmerising!

Adding these beaches to my summer bucket list.

Love this festive swatch by Lauren!

If you missed it, I went to the Boxing Day sales at 7am 🙊 Catch my haul here!

However, I’ve still got the Colourpop sale to go 😅 Tempted by this new palette.

Words of wisdom for the New Year.

And some more.

This is such a practical blog post by Irene.

Boxing Day Sales – Blogmas Day 24

ROLLY Mag

My original intro for this post went like this: “Christmas is not even officially here, and yep, I’m already talking about the Boxing Day sales.”

But lol as I edit this on December 23rd, I’ve already made my first Boxing Day purchase at Holy Grail Cosmetics – oops.

The sales truly are starting earlier and earlier this year!

I know I’m going to be tempted- but I am realllllly going to try to stick to my ‘Low Buy December.’

At the same time, I *plan* on hardcore saving in 2020 for a trip to America. So I want to “treat myself” this Boxing Day, before the strict saving begins in 2020. I literally have an excuse for everything. I’m terrible.

Try to think of it as a good time to treat yourself to those Christmas items you wanted, but didn’t receive.

Many of the brands I’m going to talk about, you can shop through the app ‘ShopBack’. I know it sounds too good to be true, but trust me, I use it and it works. You can sign up using my referral code here, and we both get $5 added to our accounts. Not spon just love a sale.

Tribe Skincare / here

Back during the Black Friday sales, Tribe announced that they would only participate in Boxing Day Sales if they had stock left. However, they have launched a 10% off code. I highly recommend the anti-redness serum. I would also really like to try the body wash, as Amy from @bottledbeautyblog said it has really helped with her KP.

Priceline / here

We can expect a few sales from Priceline, they usually do a few days of dedicated sales after Christmas. From memory, last year’s sales were nothing too notable. But I’m picky- if it’s not 40-50% off at Priceline, I don’t want it!

Chemist Warehouse / here

I didn’t really pay much attention to Chemist Warehouse’s sales last year- but I’m sure we can expect something. I’m hoping for further Fragrance sales and Flower Beauty.

Nikkia Joy Cosmetics / here

This Velvet Finishing Powder is much loved in the beauty community. During black Friday, it was 30% off. If the sale is bigger than this, I might give it a try.

Colourpop / here

Black Friday sales were 30% off and there was very decent stock upkeep. Sometimes, CP play games and popular items are suspiciously out of stock just before the sale begins. However, I was very impressed with their BF sale and hope they continue this into Boxing Day.  I certainly have my eye on a few things- like the Bye Bye Birdie palette that I regret not getting at BF.

V & Me Custom Designs / here

These pieces are already so affordable, but Catherine often does extremely generous discounts. I have my eye on the thread through earrings.

Mint & Moss / here

Accessories galore! You do need more, despite what your logic may say.

Rush Rush Co / here

Similarly to the above, you can never have too many scrunchies or earrings. Facts.

Frank Bod / here

I know I keep comparing these sales to Boxing Day, sorry, but it’s a pretty good standard to live up too. I bought both of the illuminators in the 20% off sales- they’re pretty but you probably don’t need both. But who am I to hold you back.

Sephora / here

Sephora already launched their sale and it’s got some super luxe products included… lots of Marc Jacobs and ABH. I’ll e heading in store to see if I reallllly want anything.

Mecca / here

Mecca will probably do something really generous, like a teeny tiny GWP if you spend over five million dollars. Honestly, I’ so disappointed in Mecca during peak sale seasons. Remember Black Friday, when they had one Urban Decay palette on sale. Lol. I hope they prove me wrong and produce a sale of substance but I’m not holding my breath.

Princess Polly / here

I feel like the beauty section on this website is a somewhat hidden treasure. Be sure to check them out.

ASOS / here

ASOS have a good range of beauty products, including a lot of products usually unavailable to us Aussies. However, they really do not take much care at all when they send the products. I bought a Makeup Revolution palette from them, and it came in no protective packaging whatsoever. I can’t believe it arrived alive. So just be mindful of that, and maybe don’t risk it for palettes and things- only non-breakables.

Makeup Revolution / here

MR do 50% off sales and good deals on international shipping. So if you’re going to buy a decent amount of stuff, it’s definitely worth it. However, I’ll probably just buy a few bits from Priceline if they’re included in the sale.

Discount Beauty Boutique / here

There sales are often about 15%-ish which is pretty good for the brands they stock. I have my eye on the Moonslice Beauty palettes in particular, also Ofra.

Glam Raider / here

These sales have already started and include Lunar Beauty and XO. Hopefully they’ll add more products to the sale.

Natural Supply Co / here

A local Melbourne business, my picks would be their stock of Madara (the peel in particular) and they also stock Tribe, if you’ve missed out on anything from their website directly.

I’m sure there will be other fab sales, but I’m tired and overwhelmed already.

I’ll update my Instagram with more sales, and the exact details of the sales mentioned above. As soon as I know, you’ll know!

Happy shopping!

Filters and Augmented Reality: Interview with CPCA’s Dr Molton – Blogmas Day 23

ROLLY Mag
The online world provides us many opportunities to escape reality.
Filters and “I Woke Up Like This” culture make it easy for us, behind the screen, to distort our online “reality.”
However, there is definitely a growing awareness of misrepresentation. Both from users, and the platforms on which the filters are present.
Instagram’s move to ban all augmented reality (AR) filters that promote cosmetic medical enhancements is a move welcomed by The Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA)

Earlier this year, the CPCA first flagged its concerns about the impact of social media and the growing trivialisation of cosmetic procedures by launching its Get Real campaign. A growing number of patient’s had unrealistic expectations in terms of procedural results, and so Get Real is designed to provide education and accurate information to the Australian public about non- surgical cosmetic enhancements.

I was extremely interested and honoured to have the opportunity to interview President of the CPCA, Dr Michael Molton.

Can you explain why augmented reality filters on Instagram were so misleading?

I think the description says it all. ‘augmented reality’. ARFs produce unrealistic expectations in young vulnerable patients. Some young women, and perhaps men too, have been disinterested when the doctor provides information about risk, they just want to look like the best selfie they took ten minutes ago, for the least amount of money…..oh no not that one…..this one. Wait…..ok, that one’s terrible. Yep, found it, this is the one. So Doc, I want you to make me look like this. By the way, do you do pay later?

Why did the CPCA feel there was such a need for the Get Real campaign?

There was this first occasion when a patient showed me a selfie that had no resemblance to her appearance, and her request was to ‘look like this’. That’s called ‘snap-chat dysmorphia’ and I soon discovered so many of my colleagues were getting similar requests. Get Real makes so much sense in two words. Firstly, come on, you know when you take that mag cut-out to the hairdressers and the stylist looks at you, and he says ‘Can I be honest with you? No one can do that with your hair….’ So let’s get real. Realistic expectations are so important. Plus, someone’s going stick a needle in your face. Several times. What is this? Magic? No, it’s real. Real prescription-only medications, with real side effects and real potential complications, and while not that often, disastrous complications, and I’m not making this up.

CPCA applauds Instagram’s actions to ban AR filters…. What can everyday users on the platform do to be more mindful about the information they share regarding cosmetic enhancement?

Just yesterday I saw a social media platform post of a message advertising ‘we can make you look like your filtered selfie’. The accompanying image ‘Doll Face’ was flawless. To me this is more likely to promote social isolation and feelings of inadequacies when, guess what, it doesn’t happen. So girls, swipe left and give these places the sad face emoji. And when you scroll through all the various shades, sepias, enhancements, before you click send, stop and think before re-posting. Why am I doing this? Perhaps more important, who am I trying to impress and why?

Under-18s on social media have restricted viewing to various content- why is this age group so vulnerable?

That’s a good question. It’s not just Under-18s when it comes to cosmetic medicine. And don’t get me started on too much cocooning of our young people in the name of ‘protecting’ them. The more you do this, the more you drive things underground. I mean, look at the stance on concert pill testing. Our young people are not stupid. But the problem is, nobody, not even over 18s, can find out any proper information on cosmetic injectables. The Government won’t let you find out. While well-meaning, because the medications used are real prescription-only medications, the Government doesn’t want these products ‘unnecessarily promoted’. Well sorry, there’s a difference between ‘unnecessary promotion’ and available, essential patient information so the public can make informed decisions. On the other hand, our pollies are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We can’t be pitching prescription drugs willy nilly.

We all know the dangers (and temptation) of Dr Google… If someone is interested in non-surgical cosmetic enhancements, where do you suggest they start their research?

Lately, I‘ve seen a big change. All this distorted lip pumping and cheeks that close people’s eyes when they smile seem to be getting the big thumbs down. I‘d like to think, through initiatives like the CPCA’s Get Real campaign, the ‘fad’ of ‘augmented reality’ is becoming more like last week‘s favourite pass-time, SUPs, Hot Yoga, cross-fit and dare I say it…..hair extensions. Patients are coming in, and the first thing they say is ‘you’re not going to make me look like one of those freaks on tv are you?’. Now they are asking, ‘how much experience have you had, what training did you do, am I a good candidate’. I don’t have to tell people to do their research. They already know.

Thank you to both Caroline of Raw Vision Marketing and Dr Molton.

2020 Project Pan – Blogmas Day 22

ROLLY Mag

I had a look back at my original 2019 Project Pan blog post, in the hopes I could do an update on it… but I realise there is not much to update you on. So, I am combining my 2019 updates with my 2020 project pan goals.

Rimmel Bronzer / here

I had aimed to hit pan on my Rimmel Bronzer, but never got there. This is because:

1) It literally seems to last forever

2) I’ve discovered new bronzes including this Elf one and this Fluff one

3) I don’t wear a full face (bronzer is included in my full face) very often! Therefore, the product itself isn’t being used very often.

And so, I am adding this bronzer to my 2020 project pan alongside a few other products.

Physician’s Formula blush / here

Blush- as a category- was a new discovery to me in 2019. I have totally fallen in love with the product, including ones by Elf and Flower. I do really like this PF one as well. It’s very subtle, which means I have honestly been reaching for it most days, over my other two. If I keep up using it like I do, I should be able to hit pan this year.

Revlon Lip Tint Cushion / here

My lip product collection is, ahem, out of hand. And it’s all similar dark rose shades. I have a type.

This particular product is so easy and non-fuss to wear, but it’s also not overly long lasting. I’m hoping to reach for this a bit more often and finish it. I would definitely repurchase (once I finish this one gosh dang it), and am keen to try some other shades.

OMShe Primer / here

This was my holy grail for so long- and honestly it still is! It’s the perfect all rounder primer. However, I do love a mattifying or glowy primer- something with a purpose. And so I’ve stopped reaching for this so much. It’s getting old so I’d like to try and use it up.

I only have a few products here, to start with. A lot of products I do want to finish, and empty, but I will add them to this list as the year goes by.

How did you go with your 2019 Project Pan?
