Summer Newsletter 2022 #9

summer newsletter

Are you a Team Monday lover or hater? If I have the day off, I love it to get my week kick started with heaps of organisation and planning etc. But if I have to work, like I do currently, I could hit snooze over and over and over again. Lol. Nonetheless, it’s just a day, right?!

A few of my fave things: Lola and my Shop Vestirsi bag at a cafe

A lesson I learnt…

The discipline vs motivation argument has never really landed with me. I just didn’t get it. Until a friend asked ‘how do you do it?’ referring to my commitment to the gym. I pondered on my answer… ‘I just do.’ And then it clicked… this is exactly what discipline over motivation is.

I think this quote from this Medium article explains it well:

Motivation will fire the engine… at first. Discipline will keep you going when you think it’s out of gas.

For me, going to the gym is such a habit now. I think my good headspace helps too. I am truly going to the gym for the feeling of strength it gives me, and the outlet it provides. How my body looks isn’t even close to the top of the list of motivators. Plus, and I think this is where the discipline component comes in, it gives me such valuable structure to my day. A routine.

I was proud of myself when I made this discovery, that yes, I am disciplined.

This is another chunky read but interesting if you have the chance.

Content I enjoyed…

Starting back at uni has allowed me to shake up my routines a bit- something I enjoy and find fascintaing about other people. This was an interesting read about routines (ft my routine queen, Eli Rallo.)

Similarly, uni from home has allowed more day time hours for walking – yay! I like to engage with a Hot Girl Walk mindset, or a Silly Little Walk mindset… depending on the vibes lol.

Another Bustle piece, this time about intuition which was informative and practical!

This was a fun article from frankie ranking the least to most tolerable house chores. I would like to add that filling up with petrol is another insufferable adult-ing task however in an effort to romanticise my life I am trying to shift my mindset on this lol.

Something I recommend…

Reading a magazine. Ok… I haven’t yet but that link I shared from Frankie above reminded me that they exist oops. And with Unidays you can get 25% off a subscription! So I am considering that… ROLLY Mag started because of how influential magazines were in my teen years so I’m keen to get back to my roots, if you will 😉

Take care, friends xx

SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2022 #8

summer newsletter

Happy Monday, friends. Catch up on the rest of the summer newsletter series here :))

I went to the AFLW last week, and watched the most beautiful dusk game! I find doing a fun activity on a Friday night, even though you’re tired from the week, makes the weekend seem much longer. Life hack?? Lol.

A lesson I learnt…

This past week I have been *stressing* about the return of uni, and on top of that, the return to face to face learning on campus. I rejigged my schedules, meal planned meticulously, pre packed and organised my life… only to be told today, the day before I begin, that we would be online. Lol, thanks so much for the heads up uni… Lesson learnt? No point stressing in advance because things (especially uni things) can always change.

Content I enjoyed…

I really haven’t been online that much this week but here are some of my recent IG saves…

Something I recommend…

Read that book you’ve been procrastinating. I finally picked up Friends and Dark Shapes over the weekend from a recent library haul… and I am really enjoying the act of reading. The book itself has a calmness to it which I also enjoy, I’m not a fan of suspense. In Sally Rooney style, the book doesn’t use quotation marks however unlike Sally Rooney, I don’t find this unbearable lol.

Take care, friends xx

Summer Newsletter 2022 #7

summer newsletter

Happy Monday, friends. Catch up on the rest of the summer newsletter series here :))

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? It’s my brother’s birthday so we always celebrate that, but my parents have always added a Valentine’s flair to the day which is special. I know it can be cringey to see couples celebrating online (not me, as a single pringle) but truly… who is it hurting? Let people live haha!

A lesson I learnt…

Exercising for yourself, rather than an extrinsic reason or aspiration, makes a world of difference. This week I joined a soccer team… the last time I played for a club outside of school was 2015, so this is a big deal. I miss being a part of a team, that is my main motivator. But exercising at training to work on fitness and skills is so rewarding because ultimately, I am doing it for my own development. I want to be better. I don’t want to look a different way, I just want to feel different. Or at least, feel my best on the field. It’s very liberating.

Content I enjoyed…

Life lessons from a 21 year old.

This TED blog is about getting into exercising but more so about the habit of it. Fascinating stuff.

I was diagnosed with anxiety in 2021- it’s an entirely new feeling to me and really threw me off in terms of trusting myself. Something I would often ask myself, and my friends and therapists is ‘is it your intuition or anxiety?’ So when Kirstie’s newsletter popped into my inbox over the weekend, I could not believe my eyes. It was titled exactly that… Is It Your Intuition or Anxiety? Such a good read! (And the internet proves yet again that I have never had a unique thought in my life lol!)

Something I recommend…

I finally got around to watching Season 2 of Cheer this weekend. I binged it all on Sunday afternoon instead of doing errands hehe. I, like the rest of the world, adored season 1. Morgan was my fave, and I was in awe of Monica. I wanted to be a leader like her. Season 2… broke my heart in ways I did not expect at all. It was still empowering and inspiring – cheer is such an incredible sport and I think this show has helped give it the credit it deserves. But the season was messy and dark and gut wrenching in so many ways, off mat, that it took away from the magic. I guess that is life, but wow it was a rollercoaster. This Forbes review reflects my feelings in a much more succinct way.

Summer Newsletter 2022 #6

summer newsletter

Happy Monday, friends!

I have 3 Mondays off, this is my second, and honestly it is the best. Helps me recover from the weekend and set me up for the rest of the week. I am a big fan.

A lesson I learnt…

This week I ended a ‘talking stage’ with a guy who didn’t believe in wearing sunscreen. Major red flag, right? Yet, I ignored it. Lesson learnt… don’t compromise on your values, let alone for a BOY!

Content I enjoyed…

Off the back of that, here is a fab piece about how 3 women are dating differently in 2022, including wise words from the oracle herself, Hannah Furst.

Something I recommend…

I went to Tippy Tay *finally* and saw the Jagged Little Pill musical this weekend. The vibes at TT were immaculate and the focaccia was genuinely the best bread I have ever eaten. Get yourself a booking, it was delightful.

JLP was lovely, the first half I did find a tad underwhelming but the second act was excellent. You’ll find me listening to Alanis Morissette on repeat until further notice.

Take care, friends xx

Summer Newsletter 2022 #5

summer newsletter

Hi friends! Catch up on the other newsletters from my summer series here.

I celebrated my beautiful friend Belle’s birthday this weekend and it was so special! Such a pretty pink and floral theme which I accidentally matched my outfit with. Not mad about it haha!

A lesson I learnt…

I had an appointment with a new psychologist this week. Side note: Shopping for the perfect psych is no easy feat. He gave me an analogy that really worked with my brain. Cross your arms and notice which arm is on top. Now place the other arm on top. Took a bit of brain power, didn’t it? Not hard but not natural, at least. Is either one of the arms on top the right one? No! He encouraged me to think of thoughts like this. Whenever I get an anxious thought, acknowledge it and then replace it. The replacing is like putting my non-dominant arm on top. It won’t be natural but it will start creating a new neural pathway. Pretty cool!

Content I enjoyed…

No surprise, I am still on my Eli Rallo obsession. How good is this perspective! Not even for dating but just for life in general.

Something I recommend…

Cake. Yep, that’s it lol. Eating cake for Belle’s birthday reminded me I do not eat cake nearly enough for my liking. Coffee and cake catch ups were huge amongst my friendship group in high school but I truly haven’t enjoyed a cake like that in such a long time. Treat yo self!!

Summer Newsletter #4 2022

ROLLY Mag, summer newsletter

Happy Wednesday all! I started writing this on Tuesday, and I truly thought it was Monday, my bad… you’ll find out why in a sec haha.

A lesson I learnt…

I went away to Lorne to camp with some friends this week. What was supposed to be one night turned into three because I simply did not want to go home. I had the best time. So Tuesday was my Monday haha. But the reason this is a lesson is because I was so truly relaxed, it made me reevaluate my life in a BIG way. I need to take more time off, I need to actively seek out adventure, and I need to remember the beauty in simplicity. All of these things are hard for me to do. The feeling I have now is similar to ‘post concert depression’, I used to feel immensely sad after a concert because they were the most fun and enjoyable things I could ever imagine doing. The holiday has left me with plenty to think about that is for sure. If anyone has any advice on this I would love to hear it!

Content I enjoyed…

I haven’t consumed all that much content this week, but given the significance of the date I thought I would share this post about why January 26th is not the date to celebrate.

Something I recommend…

Book that appointment you’ve been putting off. For me, it was finally using my new referral to see a new psychologist. It’s a painful process but I need to do it for my future self. What’s a task that’s been hanging over your head for far too long?

Take care, friends! xoxo

Summer Newsletter 2022 #3

summer newsletter

Happy Monday, friends! Today I start working at my new job. I will be there full time until uni is back in late February. It is going to be a big change but I am trusting this week’s lesson and believing it!!

Read the first and second newsletter’s if you’ve missed them.

A lesson I learnt…

I struggled to decide on just one this week lol. Not a lesson per se, as I struggled to put anything into words, but a piece of advice: don’t put it down, put it back. This has been my number one New Year’s Resolution and honestly it’s pretty cool to see how it’s changing my life.

Content I enjoyed…

This piece about slow-burn romances was such a lovely read, and has made me excited to read Conversation Love which I bought recently.

Add this to your reading list… 6 relationship resolutions to make.

I got back into running this week (using the Couch to 5K app) and I like to listen to podcasts when I run. I don’t really listen to them if I’m not on a walk or run. I loved having Culture Club back in my ears. I cannot believe the PR stunt we are seeing unfold between Kayne and his girlfriend… rich people do crazy things I guess lol.

I also listened to and loved Gretchen Rubin’s Happier episode on her 22 for 2022. I enjoy both this list-style making of ‘resolutions’ and the notion of leaving one blank to come back to throughout the year. I might actually post mine once it is complete. See Gretchen’s template here.

Something I recommend…

I finally got around to watching season 2 of Bump on Stan. I adored season 1 in 2021, so rewatched it before beginning the second season. It was just as delightful. You truly need to make time for it, especially if you’re into Aussie TV.

Summer Newsletter 2022 #2

ROLLY Mag, summer newsletter

Did I nearly forget to write this post? Yes. But am I here now? Also yes.

I have had a lovely trip away to the beach, and plan on getting my life in order before I’m back to juggling all my jobs at once next week. And by in order I mean cleaning my room and watching Bump on Stan. That’s it lol!

I also got my booster shot! Melbourne friends, I went to the Royal Exhibition Building. It was such an efficient process, don’t be scared of the lines it moves so quick. They will give you the booster 3+ months since your last vaccination dose. Fabulous!

A lesson I learnt…

I wouldn’t say I have fully learnt it yet, but I am in the process of it. Nothing changes if nothing changes. I have been stuck in the vicious NY dialogue of ‘new year new me’ except lol my behaviours haven’t changed so why should I expect to feel / look different. I am committed to change but at the same it seems exceptionally scary when I have no one to blame but myself. If I don’t do the work, it is my fault, ya know.

Content I enjoyed…

I mentioned this list in last week’s newsletter, and today I present the list I made myself. It doesn’t have to have meaning for anyone but you, and it’s a really fun twist on resolutions.

Something I recommend…

I have been in SUCH A RUT when it comes to reading. I have had one book on my bedside table for the better part of a year and whilst I enjoy it in the snippets I do read, it’s not gripping me. So I went to two bookstores and bought a few new reads. Did I need them? No. But did the magic of the book stores reinstate the joy of reading within me? Absolutely. I smashed through one of the books in one day. It was an easy read, but exactly what I needed to feel the love of reading again. If you feel the same, you should consider a trip to bookstore just as a fun activity. You don’t have to leave with anything physically but maybe a little bit of inspiration will come home with you.

Summer Newsletter 2022 #1

summer newsletter

Off the back of the recent Black Friday sales, I have unsubscribed from SO MANY company emails. I spent a solid few hours of my life scrolling through my inbox, selecting ‘I am no longer interested’ and subsequently deleting the follow up emails from the brands, ‘you have been successfully unsubscribed… was it a mistake?’

NO I DON’T WANT TO BE MADE TO BELIEVE I NEED YOUR PRODUCT BECAUSE IT IS ON SALE!!!

Now, majority of the emails I get in my ‘promotions’ tab are ones I actually want to receive. And these are mostly newsletters. I am currently subscribed to

Eli Rallo’s – Salt and the City

Gyan Yankovic’s – She’ll Be Right

Shameless

Kirstie Taylor’s – Words with Kirstie.

The Broke Generation’s – Money Mondays.

I love the format of newsletters, they feel personally and like a fun bonus piece of content. I thought that the rebrand of ROLLY Mag would be content in the form of a newsletter. But I have put that idea on hold for now, because the 1) commitment and 2) I don’t feel like my newsletter has a place. Like what would I be adding to your life? I’m not sure… yet.

It is a goal of mine, but I don’t think it’s ready to be executed just now.

Instead, I am challenging myself to a newsletter style blog post, once a week every week for the summer of 2022. That’s 8 posts in 8 weeks after a 5 month hiatus! Can I do it? Who knows… especially considering I did mean to start this in December but legitimately forgot about it, yikes.

Nonetheless, let us get into it!! This will be the format of the newsletters.

 ——

A lesson I learnt… I feel like I learnt about the complexity of friendship at a very young age. And let me tell you, it hasn’t gotten any easier. I told my (then) psychologist that I feel constantly disappointed by my relationships and she suggested that maybe I am just ‘unlucky’. Yeah… that hurt a lot. Something I have been learning consistently throughout 2021 is I need to put myself first. I heard the quote ‘you have to disappoint others before you disappoint yourself’ and it goes against every fibre of my being but I am trying to put it into practise.

Content I enjoyed… I am just going to link here to the last Week Latte I posted (which was an accumulation of month’s worth of links). Enjoy! Week Latte x

Additionally, I want to show you this In / Out list by Queen Eli Rallo, I’m trying to make my own but need some suggestions!

Something I recommend… I had a girls night at Ho Chi Mama  CBD followed by Moulin Rogue The Musical and it was so utterly fantastic. The pad Thai was *almost* better than my local (nothing has ever come so close) and the show was just fabulous. Visually alone, it was such a treat. You must experience both.

Hopefully I will see you next week 😉
